Court documents describe brutal Giants fan attack

LOS ANGELES (AP) - One of two suspects accused of savagely beating a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium kicked the victim several times in the head even though he was unconscious after being punched, prosecutors alleged Monday.
Authorities for the first time provided a detailed description of the allegations against Louie Sanchez and co-defendant Marvin Norwood in a motion opposing a reduction of the $500,000 bail set for Sanchez.
The two men are charged in the beating of Bryan Stow, a paramedic who remains hospitalized with a brain injury.
Sanchez was accused of leading a violent rampage against a number of Giants fans during and after the March 31 home opener.
The trouble began inside the stadium, when Sanchez threw a soda at a woman. When her companion yelled at Sanchez, Norwood had to hold Sanchez back to stop him from attacking the man, the document states.
After the game, Sanchez ran to a group of young Giants fans and swung his fist at one of them, prosecutors said.
Then, Stow and a group of friends walked past as Sanchez stood by his sister's car. Sanchez punched a man identified as Matthew Lee, the document states, then chased Stow and others several hundred feet before hitting another man identified as Allen Jeffrey Bradford and turning his attention to Stow.
"Stow was facing defendant Norwood when Sanchez ran up behind Stow and punched him in the side of the head," the document states. "Stow's friends, who are paramedics, describe that Stow immediately lost consciousness and fell sideways to the ground without breaking his fall. When Stow's head hit the ground witnesses heard his head impact the concrete and saw it bounce."
Sanchez then kicked the unconscious Stow several times in the head while Stow's friends tried to shield him with their bodies, prosecutors said.
Norwood is also accused of kicking Stow then standing over his prone body and saying, "Who else wants to fight?"
Later on, when media reported the extent of his injuries, Sanchez told his son not to tell anyone what happened, prosecutors claimed.
Sanchez's attorney, Gilbert Quinones, said he had not seen enough evidence in the case to comment.
The request to reduce bail was continued until Sanchez's Aug. 10 arraignment.

Record-breaking US drought in July: data (AFP)
WASHINGTON (AFP) ? July was a record-breaking dry month in parts of the United States, with 12 percent of the country under an "exceptional" drought causing crop losses and water shortages, authorities said Monday.
The "exceptional" drought level, the highest on a five-step scale, spanned the largest amount of US territory since the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) at the University of Nebraska began keeping records 12 years ago, it said.
"Exceptional drought's impacts include widespread crop and pasture losses, as well as shortages of water in reservoirs, streams and wells, creating water emergencies," the center said in a statement.
Close to 18 percent of the United States is experiencing exceptional or extreme drought, with much of it located in the southern United States, including South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
The situation is getting worse, with the most recent weekly government drought report showing 41 percent of the United States facing some sort of abnormal dryness or drought, up from 36 percent the week prior.
Brian Fuchs, a climatologist at the NDMC, said moisture from Tropical Storm Don which has formed over the North Pacific Ocean and is expected to strengthen in the coming days, could bring some relief to parts of the US south.
"Whenever there is a lot of moisture in a short period of time, the potential exists for rapid improvement," Fuchs said.
"But while that possibility exists, it won't necessarily mean the end of drought in those areas. It will likely only improve by one drought category for those areas not impacted by any tropical storms."

Samsung second quarter profit slides 18 percent (AP)
SEOUL, South Korea ? Samsung's net profit slid 18 percent in the second quarter as weakness in semiconductors and liquid crystal displays countered the electronics giant's growing strength in smartphones.
Samsung, the world's biggest manufacturer of memory chips, LCDs and flat screen televisions, earned 3.51 trillion won ($3.33 billion) in the three months ended June 30, it said Friday in a regulatory filing. Samsung earned 4.28 trillion won the same period last year.
Samsung has suffered this year due to slack prices for electronic components amid oversupply and weak demand. Net profit slumped 30 percent in the first quarter amid declines in memory chip prices and reduced profitability in LCDs and TVs.
Second quarter sales at the Suwon, South Korea-based company rose 4.1 percent to 39.4 trillion won from 37.9 trillion won a year earlier.
"We were confronted with a difficult business environment overall," Robert Yi, a Samsung vice president, said on an earnings conference call. Global economic uncertainties persisted, and consumer demand for products such as personal computers and televisions was "soft."
He added that PC and TV demand weakness may continue in the current third quarter given that the global economci recovery remains unclear.
Yi said Samsung's revenue gain was "mainly due to strong handset performance led by continuing success of our smartphones," though emphasized that smartphones and tablets face intensifying competition. Both operating profit and sales in Samsung's memory business fell as weak global personal computer sales suppressed demand for DRAM, or dynamic random access memory, chips used in the devices, the company said in a release.
Samsung's display panel business racked up an operating loss of 210 billion won, reversal from profit of 880 billion won the year before, with sales declining 9 percent as LCD prices fell.
Yi called the results in that sector "quite disappointing."
Unlike in the past, the company did not provide specific figures for individual product sales volumes and prices during the quarter.
Yi cited "increased risks that the information we provide may adversely affect our own businesses" as among reasons for the company's decision to not give such details.
The bright spot in the second quarter continued to be mobile phones. Revenues in the company's mobile communications business, which includes phones, rose 45 percent from the year before. Sales of mobile phones increased from the previous quarter on the back of the company's flagship Galaxy S II smartphone.
Samsung, which ranks No. 2 in mobile phones behind Finland's Nokia Corp., has sold more than 5 million units globally of the updated smartphone since it went on sale in late April.
Samsung expects demand for mobile phones to increase 15 percent in the second half of this year driven by consumers upgrading to smartphones, it said in the release.
Shin Jong-kyun, president of the company's mobile communications business, has said previously that the company's sales target for mobile phones this year is 300 million handsets. Out of that total, the company expects 60 million to be smartphones.
Shares in Samsung, which announced results before South Korea's stock market opened, rose 0.8 percent to close Friday at 844,000 won. The company's stock price has declined 11 percent so far this year.
