Happiness: A Step Away - The Self Improvement Blog

By M. Farouk Radwan -

Happiness stems from the inner feeling of peace and the calmness surrounding it. While many believe that happiness would come to them from the things that they do or the needs they fulfill, it does not truly work that way.

While little things could change your mood and make you happy, happiness comes from inside. Of course, there might be factors that activate your happiness, but some people, at the worst times, remain happy.

In the saddest moment, there is always something that can change your mood. It?s not something that you can see, and only few people can feel it. It requires a lot of work in order to obtain and once obtained, you can never let it go. Just like you, everyone has trouble of his own and everybody goes through hard times.

If you identify and find the happiest man in the world and ask him the reason for his happiness, he will say that there is no reason he can name, he is just happy that way. Don?t -you- mistake happiness with lack of worrisome or for the company of a nice lady or for the wealth, but all of that perishes.

Nothing truly lasts forever, because eternity is a long time. If you want to achieve happiness, then you are up for a long list of tasks that you need to do. You need to get rid of all the straight negative feelings that you encounter because of things you have done or things that were done to you and instead embrace happiness as a friend rather than a feeling; a friend whom you can count on when everything seems to go against you.

Anger will not allow you to reach for happiness. What anger does is, eventually, destructive to both your serenity and the peace surrounding you. While you are in an angry state, go back into your memories and find something that will soothe you. While your memories might all seem dark, there?s that one thing that will make you feel good.

When you do well, do not expect or wait for anything in return. If there is a reason for the good feelings, then keep in mind that the reason will fade some day and you will not be able to do good again because your motivation is gone.

And remember that because you do not receive positive effects in return, you will give yourself a reason to be happy when the world frowns at you. You are the master of yourself and only you can give yourself the happiness you need to go on and smile when everything seems dim.

Your smile will turn everything around because you attract this positive energy that will bring you good things in return.

If you ever feel that you are lonely, bring your happiness out through memories and if you have no memories, imagine things that will make you happy. While imagination seems to be an anti-realistic topic, it is the reason for most inventions and the greatest invention that man has ever made is happiness.

Happiness is all around you, if you take a closer look at the world all around you.

But the negative feelings that might encounter you do not only come from you, sometimes they come from things or people around you. If you fail to do something, will you throw yourself into depression or just get back up and hope -even when all hope is lost- so you would be able to keep on going?

If you surrender to the negative feelings then you lose your ownership over your own self and in return, you might seek alternatives that will make you feel in control. But that is never the way to go.

A bit of forgiveness and humble apologetic behavior will turn the tides around. When you are rightfully do something and someone else takes the credit for it, smile and they will lose everything that they have done to steal your accomplishment.

Vengeful behavior will get you nowhere, but acceptance will bring you strength and forgiveness will make you win.

It all comes from you. You control your emotions. You are the master of yourself. If you seek happiness, then know that it does not come from anything around you but your own spirit. If you seek happiness then become happy because nothing else will make you happy no matter how good it is. It will all come to you when you smile to the world and give it a signal to smile back at you.

(AP) ? A fast-strengthening Hurricane Sandy churned north Monday, raking ghost-town cities along the Northeast corridor with rain and wind gusts. Subways and schools were closed across the region of 50 million people, the floor of the New York Stock Exchange was deserted, and thousands fled inland to await the storm's fury.

The monster hurricane was expected to make a westward lurch and aim for New Jersey, blowing ashore Monday night and combining with two other weather systems ? a wintry storm from the west and cold air rushing in from the Arctic ? to create an epic superstorm.

Authorities warned that New York City and Long Island could get the worst of the storm surge ? an 11-foot onslaught of seawater that could swamp lower Manhattan, flood the subways and cripple the underground network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation's financial capital.

Because of Sandy's vast reach, with tropical storm-force winds extending almost 500 miles from its center, other major cities across the Northeast ? Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston ? also prepared for the worst.

"The days ahead are going to be very difficult," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said. "There will be people who die and are killed in this storm."

By late morning, the storm had strengthened to 90 mph and had already knocked out power to tens of thousands of people. Sandy was about 200 miles southeast of Atlantic City, N.J., where the emptied-out streets were mostly under water and where an old section of the historic boardwalk broke up and washed away.

Authorities moved to close the Holland Tunnel, which connects New York and New Jersey, and a tunnel between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Street grates above the New York subway were boarded up, but officials worried that seawater would seep in and damage the electrical switches.

Millions of people in the storm's path stayed home from work. Subways, buses and trains shut down, and more than 7,000 flights in and out of the East were canceled, snarling travel around the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people were under orders to flee the coast, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City, but authorities warned that the time to get out was short or already past.

Sheila Gladden evacuated her home in Philadelphia's flood-prone Eastwick neighborhood and headed to a hotel.

"I'm not going through this again," said Gladden, who had 5 1/2 feet of water in her home after Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

"I think this one's going to do us in," said Mark Palazzolo, who boarded up his bait-and-tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., with the same wood he used in past storms, crossing out the names of Hurricanes Isaac and Irene and spray-painting "Sandy" next to them.

"I got a call from a friend of mine from Florida last night who said, 'Mark, get out! If it's not the storm, it'll be the aftermath. People are going to be fighting in the streets over gasoline and food.'"

President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney called off their campaign events at the very height of the presidential race, with just over a week to go before Election Day. And early voting was canceled Monday in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

The president declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits.

"My message to the governors as well as to the mayors is anything they need, we will be there, and we will cut through red tape," Obama said. "We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules."

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane, was blamed for 69 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. As of 11 a.m., it was moving at 18 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending an extraordinary 175 miles from its center.

Forecasters said the combined Frankenstorm could bring close to a foot of rain in places, a potentially lethal storm surge of 4 to 11 feet across much of the region, and punishing winds that could cause widespread power outages that last for days. Up to 3 feet of snow was forecast for the West Virginia mountains.

About 90 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C., the Coast Guard rescued 14 crew members by helicopter from the HMS Bounty, a replica 18th-century sailing ship that sank in the storm. The Coast Guard searched for two other crew members. The ship was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando film "Mutiny on the Bounty."

The rescued had donned survival suits and life jackets and boarded two lifeboats after the ship began taking on water. They were plucked from 18-foot seas just before sunrise.

O'Malley, the Maryland governor, said a fishing pier in the beach resort of Ocean City, not far from a popular boardwalk and amusement park, was "half-gone." The area had been ordered evacuated on Sunday.

Water was already a foot deep on the streets of Lindenhurst, N.Y., along the southern edge of Long Island, and the canals around the island's Great South Bay were bulging two hours before high tide. Gale-force winds blew overnight over coastal North Carolina, southeastern Virginia, the Delmarva Peninsula and coastal New Jersey.

In the morning, water was already splashing over the seawalls at the southern tip of Manhattan and had matched the levels seen during Hurricane Irene in August 2011. Still, people were out jogging, walking their dogs and even taking children out in strollers amid gusts of wind.

"We're high up enough, so I'm not worried about flooding," said Mark Vial, who was pushing his 2-year-old daughter, Maziyar, in a stroller outside their building, where they live on the 15th floor. "There's plenty of food. We'll be OK."

The major American stock exchanges closed for the day, the first unplanned shutdown since the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. The floor of the NYSE, typically bustling with traders on a Monday morning, fell within the city's mandatory evacuation zone. The United Nations canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters.

New York called off school on both Monday and Tuesday for the city's 1.1 million students, and the more than 5 million people who depend on its transit network every day were left without a way to get around.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was typically blunt: "Don't be stupid. Get out."

Craig Fugate, chief of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said FEMA teams were deployed from North Carolina to Maine and as far inland as West Virginia, bringing generators and basic supplies that will be needed in the storm's aftermath.

"I have not been around long enough to see a hurricane forecast with a snow advisory in it," Fugate told NBC's "Today" show.

Karbonn Mobiles wants to be the Maruti of cell phones | Firstpost

New Delhi: The iPad Mini or the 4th generation iPad, launched by Apple on 23 October may not have India on it?s A-list? but in a price sensitive market, Apple?s loss is the local manufacturers? gain.

Even as a recent CyberMedia Tablet Market Review for Q2 2012 saw Micromax leading India?s tablet market with a market share of 18.4 percent ? beating both Samsung and Apple with market shares of 13.3 percent and 12.3 percent, respectively ? other local manufacturers are also dipping their fingers into the country?s tablet and mobile telephony pie.

One such player is Karbonn Mobiles, a joint venture company between Bangalore based United Telelinks Limited and Delhi based Jaina Marketing & Associates. The company presently has 42 products in the market ? four of them are tablets.

The company on 17 October launched its Android based 3G tablet, Agnee, which will hit markets before Diwali. The Agnee will be Karbonn?s fifth tablet to hit the market. Heralding it as the beginning of more innovation to come, Pradeep Jain, managing director, Karbonn Mobiles had said at the launch, ?Our aim is to usher in a new revolution in the tablet market with 3G technology for advanced communication and data usage, thus creating a new wavelength wherein Karbonn Mobiles can demonstrate it?s technical stewardship.?

The A7 Karbonn Mobile. Image courtesy: Karbonn Mobiles.

But Karbonn Mobiles? beginnings were as modest as its ambition now is bold.

From distribution to manufacturing

For managing director Pradeep Jain and chairman Sudhir Hasija, Karbonn Mobiles was born from the thought of owning one?s own mobile phone company rather than doing business for others.

The acquaintances-turned-friends-turned business partners knew each other for about 10 years before they joined hands to start Karbonn Mobiles in 2009. Jain was already a mobile phone distributor for almost a decade and a half when they started the company and Hasija ran his telecom manufacturing, services and distribution business. Jain?s company, the Jaina Group, launched HTC in India in 2005. Today, it is the distributor for HTC in India and South Asia, and for Motorola and LG in India.

?We were into distribution for about 15 years before we set up Karbonn Mobiles. The distribution business was tough and we thought why not manufacture our own phones instead of just distributing phones for other companies. It?s like living in a rented house: one lives there till one has to but everyone eventually wants to move into their own house,? Jain told Firstpost.

The company began its operations in 2009 manufacturing simple feature mobile phones. They gradually moved on to smartphones and tablets, even as India?s local manufacturers took its market by storm. Karbonn Mobiles is one among the many local companies, like Micromax, that is competing with international brands like Samsung and Apple for India?s smartphone and tablet space.

The Trajectory

Presently the company has eight smartphones, 30 feature phones and four tablets available in the market ? its smartphones are in the price range of Rs 4,400-12,000, its feature phones cost Rs 1,190-3,000 and its tablets cost between Rs 5,490-9,990. The company, Jain said, aims at launching an average of two to three products each month.

Karbonn Mobiles, which has a monthly average sales of 50,000 phone units, has till date sold 30 million devices, according to Jain. This trajectory can be noted in its sales numbers since it began. In its first month of operations in December 2009 Karbonn sold 25,000 phones. In 2010-11 its sales were close to 2.15 million phones, and in 2011-12 the company sold six million feature phones. The company?s revenue saw a similar upswing ? in 2010-11 the company?s revenue was Rs. 1,500 crore, 2011-12 saw revenues increase to Rs 1,600 crore and Jain told Firstpost that the company was aiming to hit a revenue of Rs 2,800 crore this fiscal year.

It?s employee strength too has also gone up, starting with 70 permanent and no contract employees in 2009 to 823 permanent and close to 400 contract employees presently.

Karbonn, the Maruti of the mobile industry?

Claiming a distribution footprint of over 98 percent across India?s districts, Karbonn devices are available in more than 72,000 outlets and has over 800 service centres ? to ensure efficient, convenient and quick after sales support. The company is aiming to replicate the Maruti model ? in after-sales effort and mass scale.

?We want to be the Maruti of the mobile phone industry ? both in after-sales service and customer service, and also in becoming the number one in our business. Customer service is the backbone of any business success and it is our dream to be like Maruti,? Jain told Firstpost.

?The Indian consumer is quite complex and wants everything ? a good product, from a good brand, at a good price ? and we are trying to cater to all of that,? Jain said.

And while the joke may be on the mobile phone in rural India, where there are fewer toilets than cell phones, Jain told Firstpost that his company was trying to change the way India?s poor lead life through a more efficient use of cell phones, smartphones, tablets and the Internet.

?When people have exposure, their lifestyle will change. Mobility is the first step,? he said, adding, ?We are trying to affect the way rural India lives by manufacturing affordable, yet quality products that they can use. We are also trying to make it as user friendly for them as possible ? by incorporating things as simple as local languages and software which they can use to communicate with the rest of the world without the burden of illiteracy.?

Smoke-free laws led quickly to fewer hospitalizations

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Smoke-free legislation was associated with substantially fewer hospitalizations and deaths from heart and respiratory diseases, according to research in the American Heart Association journal Circulation.

Researchers reviewed 45 studies covering 33 smoke-free laws at the local and state levels around the United States and from countries as varied as Uruguay, New Zealand and Germany and found:

  • Comprehensive smoke-free laws were associated with a rapid 15 percent decrease in heart attack hospitalizations and 16 percent decrease in stroke hospitalizations.
  • Smoke-free laws were also rapidly followed by a 24 percent decrease in hospitalizations for respiratory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • The most comprehensive laws -- those covering workplaces, restaurants and bars -- resulted in the highest health benefits.

"The public, health professionals and policy makers need to understand that including exemptions and loopholes in legislation -- such as exempting casinos -- condemns more people to end up in emergency rooms," said Stanton Glantz, Ph.D., senior study author and director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco. "These unnecessary hospitalizations are the real cost of failing to enact comprehensive smoke-free legislation."

The findings support the American Heart Association's position that smoke-free laws should be comprehensive and apply to all workplaces and public environments, including restaurants, bars and casinos. The analysis also is consistent with other studies that have found smoke-free laws were followed by significant decreases in acute heart attack and other cardiac-related hospital admissions.

"Stronger legislation means immediate reductions in secondhand smoke-related health problems as a byproduct of reductions in secondhand smoke exposure and increases in smoking cessation that accompany these laws," Glantz said. "Passage of these laws formalize and accelerate social change and the associated immediate health benefits."

Iran: Drone hit by Israel not 'latest' technology

(AP) ? Iran's defense minister says his country has drones far more advanced than the unmanned aircraft launched by Lebanon's Hezbollah and downed by Israel earlier this month.

Sunday's report by the official IRNA news agency appears similar to previous claims that Iranian drones have expanded capabilities and range, including the ability to reach Israeli airspace.

The IRNA report quotes Gen. Ahmad Vahidi as saying the drone by Iranian-backed Hezbollah was not the "latest Iranian technology, definitely." He did not elaborate.

Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah has said the drone was manufactured in Iran and assembled in Lebanon.

Later, Iran claimed that Iranian-made surveillance drones had made dozens of apparently undetected flights into Israeli airspace from Lebanon in recent years. An Israeli official rejected the account.
