From The Australian News?..
BUSY mums are shunning the gym in favour of exercising at home.
Concerns about childhood obesity and the move away from expensive gym memberships are pushing parents to ?invest? in home exercise equipment so that the family can exercise together.
Fitbiz Exercise owner Janelle Chambers said sales of treadmills, exercise bikes and cross trainers have doubled in the last few years as parents search for ways to drag their children away from the TV.
?Parents who are concerned about childhood obesity are investing in a piece of equipment for the family,? Mrs Chambers said. ?I?d say about 70 per cent of women are now buying equipment for the whole family and they?ll have it for the next 15 years.?
The news comes as a BIG W survey of more than 1100 Aussie women found 85 per cent want to lose weight and improve their fitness but are too embarrassed to go to the gym. Nearly 70 per cent would rather exercise at home with a DVD or their own equipment.
YMCA of Sydney communications manager James Ellender said more families are training together to ?feel connected to the community?.
Fitness trainer Michelle Bridges, whose range of One Active gym gear is selling at BIG W, said families can create fitness centres in their own backyards.
