Paul returns to Iowa as rivals eye his supporters

(AP) ? Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is rallying his diehard supporters, whom his rivals regard as the greatest complication in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

With less than a week until Iowa's leadoff contest, Paul planned to meet with supporters near Des Moines. The other GOP candidates spread out across the state Wednesday to woo potential caucus-goers, many of whom are still undecided amid a flood of television and radio ads. Paul's rivals also worked to disqualify him on social issues, foreign affairs and even his decades-old newsletter.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday he couldn't vote for Paul if he were to become the GOP nominee and called his views "totally outside the mainstream of every decent American" during an interview with CNN.

Gov. Rick Perry said during a campaign stop in Council Bluffs that his fellow Texan was dangerous: "You don't have to vote for a candidate who would allow Iran to wipe Israel off the face of the earth and then ultimately America."

As Paul's poll numbers have risen, so has scrutiny of him. That has led to questions about a newsletter he published in the early 1990s, when he was not serving in Congress. Among the quotes from the newsletter: "Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities."

Paul has said many of the passages were written by aides but acknowledged he was responsible.

A conservative with libertarian leanings, Paul commands strong allegiance from his supporters but appears to have little potential to expand his appeal and emerge as a serious challenger for the nomination. Yet he could complicate other candidates' pathway to the nomination.

Some polls show Paul on top in Iowa, and a caucus victory for him could prove embarrassing to candidates such as Rep. Michele Bachmann or former Sen. Rick Santorum. Both essentially relocated to Iowa ? it's Bachmann's birthplace ? with hopes that momentum from here would launch a national campaign.

"If I finish dead last, way behind the pack, I'm going to pack up and go home," Santorum said in a radio interview on WHO in Des Moines. "But I don't think that's going to happen."

Santorum, more than any of the others, has campaigned in Iowa the old-fashioned way ? by doggedly visiting all 99 counties and holding hundreds of town hall meetings.

Bachmann was trying to match that. She scheduled 11 stops Wednesday to build momentum and media attention. She is lagging in fundraising, as her rivals have poured millions of dollars in advertising onto the airwaves.

The candidates and allied groups have spent more than $12 million on commercials to air through caucus day next Tuesday. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Perry and groups supporting the two men account for almost half the total, according to one estimate.

Gingrich and Perry also planned to continue their bus tours, although at a slower clip.

Romney, who a day earlier looked past his Republican rivals toward the general election during a speech to Iowans, planned the first three stops of his tour in a state he had largely kept at arm's length.

"Mr. President, you have now had your moment," he said Tuesday, criticizing President Barack Obama and sounding every bit the nominee he hopes to become. "We have seen the results. And now, Mr. President, it is our time."

US, Europe woes hit China manufacturing

China's manufacturing activity continued to shrink in December, HSBC said Friday, as economic strife in the key European and US markets hobbled demand for the nation's goods.

Workers arrange steel pipes at a factory in Huaibei, east China's Anhui province. China's manufacturing activity continued to shrink in December, HSBC said Friday, as economic strife in the key European and US markets hobbled demand for the nation's goods.

The final HSBC purchasing managers' index (PMI) reached 48.7 in December, slightly better than the 47.7 in November but lower than preliminary PMI of 49 released earlier this month, as new orders dropped.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion while a reading below 50 suggests a contraction.

While the figures are a slight improvement, the data adds to mounting evidence export-driven China is slowing and will ratchet up pressure on Beijing to further loosen monetary policies to prevent a painful hard landing.

Manufacturing activity contracted in November for the first time in 33 months, while consumer prices rose at their slowest pace in more than a year and industrial output growth hit its lowest level since 2009.

"Weakening external demand is starting to bite," Qu Hongbin, HSBC chief economist, said in a statement.

"This, plus the ongoing property market corrections, adds to calls for more aggressive action on both fiscal and monetary fronts to stabilise growth and jobs, especially with prices easing rapidly.

"Hard landings should be avoided so long as easing measures filter through in the coming months."

Beijing is anxious to prevent a sharp slowdown in the economy but at the same time it wants to avoid reigniting inflation, which hit a more than three year high of 6.5 percent in July but has since slowed.

The government has also enacted a series of policies to cool the red-hot property market, and official data has shown that home prices in most major Chinese cities fell in November from the previous month.

In a bid to boost growth and counter turmoil in Europe and the United States, China cut the amount of money banks must hold in reserve for the first time in three years late last month.

Vacaville High School's Papadopoulos named state coach of the year

His football team didn't get a chance to play for a state title, but he was still honored as the best coach in California for 2011.

Vacaville High School's Mike Papadopoulos was named the large school ESPNHS Cal-Hi Sports State Coach of the Year on Wednesday night. Cal-Hi editor Mark Tennis said there were several reasons why Papadopoulos stood out.

"The way they beat Folsom after losing 75-6 the year before," Tennis said, "plus it was his second title and not just his first. The way they beat Granite Bay. We also like the connection he has with his father-in-law (Tom Zunino) and the respect he has at the school."

Papadopoulos led the Bulldogs to their second Sac-Joaquin Section title in six years. Vacaville beat Folsom 39-35 on Dec. 3 at Sacramento State for this year's Division II championship. The Bulldogs won a Division I title in 2006 by beating Merced.

"I'm pretty speechless," Papadopoulos said. "It is really humbling and amazing. The things we do were started a long time ago and we've just tried to keep it going. We have such a neat family atmosphere at Vacaville High School that just doesn't happen a lot of places."

Vacaville posted a stellar 13-1 record this year against a strong schedule, and ended the season with a 12-game winning streak. The Bulldogs were in the discussion to represent Northern California in the state Division II title game, but section Division III champion Del Oro was chosen by section commissioners to represent the North.

Del Oro lost to Helix of La Mesa 35-24 in the state final at Carson.

The last state coach of the year from Solano County was Vallejo's Bob Patterson in 1949. Patterson later coached Zunino at Vallejo on the famed 1954 team. Colon Kilby of Vallejo won the award in 1945.

The section title also gave Papadopoulos his 70th victory in seven seasons, and an overall record of 70-15. Vacaville has won at least 10 games in five of the last six years.

The Bulldogs also have an 11-4 postseason record under Papadopoulos.

Recently he was honored by the section as one of its six model coaches for the 2011-12 school year.

Rick Prinz of Paradise and Jon Ellinghouse of Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth were the state coaches of the year for medium and small schools, respectively.

North Korea declares new 'supreme leader'

North Korea declared Kim Jong Il's son and successor "supreme leader" of the ruling party, military and the people during a memorial Thursday for his father in the government's first public endorsement of his leadership.

Kim Jong Un, head bowed and somber in a dark overcoat, stood on a balcony at the Grand People's Study House overlooking Kim Il Sung Square watching the memorial, which also served as a show of support for North Korea's next leader. He was flanked by top party and military officials, including Kim Jong Il's younger sister, Kim Kyong Hui, and her husband Jang Song Thaek, who are expected to serve as mentors of their young nephew.

Solemn and grimacing, the younger Kim stood motionless throughout the ceremony.

Given Kim Jong Un's inexperience and age ? he is in his late 20s ? there are questions outside North Korea about whether he is equipped to lead a nation engaged in long-stalled negotiations over its nuclear program and grappling with decades of economic hardship and chronic food shortages.

But support among North Korea's power brokers was unequivocal at the memorial service, attended by hundreds of thousands of people filling Kim Il Sung Square and other plazas in central Pyongyang.

Video: North Korea and hot zones to watch in 2012 (on this page)

"The fact that he completely resolved the succession matter is Great Comrade Kim Jong Il's most noble achievement," Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, told the massive audience at the square.

"Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un is our party, military and country's supreme leader who inherits great comrade Kim Jong Il's ideology, leadership, character, virtues, grit and courage," said Kim, considered North Korea's ceremonial head of state. "Kim Jong Il laid a red silk carpet, and Kim Jong Un only needs to walk on it."

Thursday's memorial "was an event to publicly reconfirm and solidify" Kim Jong Un's status, said Jeung Young-tae, an analyst with the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, South Korea.

"Kim Jong Un is already the leader of the party, military and country," he said.

'World-class military power'
Life in the North Korean capital came to a standstill as a mourners blanketed the plaza from the Grand People's Study to the Taedong River for the second day of funeral ceremonies for the late leader.

Reuters reported that temperatures that stood at about 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees Celsius) during the event. State TV showed a delegation of foreigners attending the memorial.

During the eulogy, Kim Yong Nam also said that Kim Jong Il "laid the foundation for our people to live on as autonomous people of a world-class military power and a proud nuclear state."

The North has conducted two nuclear tests.

The eulogies were short on boasts about economic achievements from a strongman who used his "military first" policy to divert resources to build a conventional and weapons of mass destruction program.

The North's economic output is now smaller than in the 1990s under the rule of his father Kim Il Sung, who founded the state in 1948, and it has been squeezed harder under international sanctions for its missile and nuclear tests.

Kim Jong Il, who led his 24 million people with absolute power for 17 years, died of a heart attack Dec. 17 aged 69 , according to state media. He inherited power from his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, who died of a heart attack in 1994, in what was the communist world's first hereditary succession.

Attention turned to Kim Jong Un after he was revealed last year as his father's choice among three known sons to carry the Kim dynasty into a third generation.

Kim Jong Il's two other sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Chol, were not spotted at either the funeral or memorial.

The process to groom Kim Jong Un was rushed compared to the 20 years Kim Jong Il had to prepare to take over from his father, and relied heavily on the Kim family bloodline and legacy as guerrilla fighters and the nation's founders.

Interactive: Meet North Korea?s first family (on this page)

Kim Il Sung is North Korea's first and only president; he retains the title "Eternal President" even after his death.

Kim Jong Il held three main positions: chairman of the National Defense Commission, general secretary of the Workers' Party and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army.

According to the constitution, his position as chairman of the National Defense Commission makes him "supreme leader" of North Korea.

However, it may take Kim Jong Un some months to assume the full panoply of official titles held by his father.

"The real question is whether the new Kim has the cruelty and cunning, qualities that his father and grandfather Kim Il Sung possessed in plenty, to preserve in the long run the essential engine of the destitute dynasty he inherits," wrote Sung-Yoon Lee of Tufts University, a leading North Korea watcher.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

NHL: New Jersey 4, Washington 3 (SO)

NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Martin Brodeur was perfect in the shootout Friday after surrendering a three-goal lead in the third period, lifting New Jersey to a 4-3 win over Washington.

Brodeur evened his record at 9-9 this season and boosted his NHL all-time record victory total to 634.

Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias scored in the shootout while Brodeur was stopping the only two shots he faced. One of those was an outstanding glove save of a shot from Washington star Alex Ovechkin.

Kovalchuk, Alexander Urbom and Adam Henrique all scored for the Devils in the second period and Brodeur had a shutout working into the third.

The Capitals then beat Brodeur three times in the final stanza, Brooks Laich scoring once and Jason Chimera twice. Chimera's second goal of the game and 13th of the season came with 1:42 left in regulation.

Michal Neuvirth made 25 saves for Washington, which has lost three of its last five.

New Jersey has an 8-1 record in shootouts this season including six victories in a row.

Washington has a 5-6 record since Dale Hunter took over as coach Nov. 28.

U.S. Mobile Device Use Increasingly Important To Holiday Sales (NewsFactor)

The use of mobile devices for making online purchases doubled in December from nine months earlier, according to a new report from RichRelevance. The customized-shopping-experience designer's study also indicates that over 90 percent of U.S. consumers making mobile purchases over the period were using an Apple device.

"The numbers across our retailing partners sites demonstrate just how powerful the iOS platform is enabling mobile web shopping and, while still below 5 percent in total conversion, mobile traffic's doubling in eight months is a trend we only see accelerating," said RichRelevance CEO David Selinger.

However, companies engaged in e-commerce also will need to boost their own efforts to make the e-commerce experience as painless as possible for consumers.

"In order to succeed in this dynamic market, retailers and brands must ensure they are addressing relevance throughout the channels where people are shopping, ensuring a seamless experience across the interplay of device, context and consumer behavior," Selinger said.

Mobile Users Spending More

The new study based on 3.4 billion shopping sessions at the Web sites of U.S. online retailers between April 1 and Dec. 18 shows that 24 percent of all U.S. online shoppers on Thanksgiving were using a mobile device. What's more, Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru said the heightened use of mobile devices for online shopping is the most notable difference during this year's holiday shopping season.

"Sixteen percent of online buyers said they shopped with their mobile devices over the Thanksgiving weekend this year -- up from 9 percent last year," Mulpuru wrote in a blog.

Between Dec. 1 and Dec. 18, U.S. consumers equipped with iOS-enabled devices spent 19 percent more on their online purchases than Android device owners, RichRelevance said. Apple device-user purchases generated $123 vs. $101 for those made by Android device users.

Over the course of the study's nine-month period, mobile-device purchases accounted for a mere 3 percent of U.S. consumer purchases overall. However, RichRelevance expects this holiday season's trend toward more mobile purchasing to continue accelerating in the years ahead as more U.S. consumers adopt smartphones and media tablets.

Meeting Mobile User Expectations

With millions of new U.S. consumers have just unwrapped a smartphone or media tablet over the holidays, the entertainment, software publishing and multimedia industries will doubtlessly see a bump in online purchases in the weeks ahead. And over the long run, Gartner is predicting that by 2015 companies engaged in e-commerce will be generating 50 percent of their Web sales by way of their social presence and mobile apps.

Mobile browsing accounted for 6.7 percent of the global market in December -- with Apple's Safari leading the pack with a 55 percent share, according to the latest data from Net Applications. With Apple's mobile devices accounting for 92 percent of all mobile purchases in December, the key lesson for mobile device rivals is that they need to revamp their own browser offerings to elevate the e-commerce experience they offer mobile device users.

Companies and organizations engaged in e-commerce also will need to "scale up their operations to handle the increased visitation loads resulting from customers not having to wait until they are in front of a PC to obtain answers to questions or place orders," noted Gartner Vice President Gene Alvarez.

As more consumers use smartphones and other mobile devices, Alvarez noted, they will expect an extension of their customer experience to be supported by this kind of device while demanding that social aspects of the Web be intertwined with this experience.

"In time, e-commerce vendors will begin to offer context-aware mobile-shopping solutions as part of their overall Web sales offerings," Alvarez predicted.

Drain retirement fund to pay debt?

Dear Debt Adviser,
I have about $17,000 in credit card debt (I paid one card completely off -- hooray!) and a total debt of about $33,000. I'm making my payments on time, and for several months I have managed to avoid charging anything on a card. I have about $150,000 in an annuity-stock account for retirement. It's not much, I know, for someone over 50. The $150,000 grows slowly, while the credit card rate is almost 15 percent. Would it be a poor choice to use some of my retirement fund to pay off my debts? I'm hesitant about touching my retirement fund, even though I intend to work as long as I am healthy.
-- David

Dear David,
Thanks for writing. Let's put your situation in a broader context. Intending to work forever in a fulfilling job is not just good, it's great. But the reality is that this decision isn't necessarily up to you in today's employment market. Besides illness, there are at least a dozen other things that may, or will, end your career prematurely.

Because you are in the over-50 crowd, it is important to get your unsecured debt paid down and, most importantly, learn how to stop using credit to extend your income. Why? Well, you touch on the main reason in your letter: You intend to work as long as you are able. Once you reach a certain age, you need to be prepared for when you won't be able to work. Building a safety net of retirement funds and emergency savings takes on added urgency.

I completely understand your desire to dump your $17,000 in credit card debt. Almost all of us would be uncomfortable with that level of debt. But I urge you to imagine being hit with a real emergency, and then think about what you'd need to get through it. What if you had a stroke or heart attack, got laid off or went through a divorce? In extreme situations, having a savings safety net is much better than being debt-free. So, keep the retirement savings and add to it.

Next, continue to avoid charging things on your credit card.

Instead of draining your retirement account, shop around for a credit card with an interest rate of 9 percent or less and low balance-transfer fees. If you are successful, you will need to make a monthly payment of $540 to be debt-free in three years -- that should be your goal. By becoming debt-free and adding to savings, you'll be better prepared for whatever life throws your way.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren. Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends about their Friday night plans. Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos, including at least one that went viral.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination is quickly becoming a crowded family affair with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than just smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for the husbands they've loyally campaigned for. Romney extols her husband's character and says "to me that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry. Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids, including those born to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, are helping, too, acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with school work," Santorum's daughter Elizabeth lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

She has taken time off from her junior year at the University of Dallas to serve as a self-described "field staffer/phone banker/chauffeur/surrogate speaker," for her father, primarily in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa.

Her father, who hopes Iowa's socially conservative voters turn out for him on caucus night Jan. 3, rolled out an ad late last week featuring the entire Santorum clan, including the family German shepherd, Schotzy. The spot highlights his 21-year marriage to his wife, Karen, notes that he has coached Little League and introduces viewers to the youngest of the couple's seven children, Isabella, born in 2008 with a genetic disorder.

Sometimes the family members campaign with the candidates and other times they go it alone.

Such family involvement carries risks and benefits. The stories they tell often humanize the candidates and help voters relate to them. But the things they say, and do, can sometimes cause headaches for the campaign advisers who are left to try to figure out a way out.

While Rick Perry spent several days campaigning in Iowa recently, his wife was hundreds of miles away in New Hampshire emphasizing his small-town upbringing and conservative values at a retirement community chapel. Audience members then peppered her with detailed questions about such subjects as taxes, immigration and the death penalty.

"She handled them quite well," said Sid Schoeffler, an independent voter from Concord. "When she knew the answer or knew the campaign's story line, she recited it. And when she didn't know, she said so. I thought that was refreshing."

"Compared to what I expected, she made a favorable impression," he said. "But whether it's enough to swing my vote, I don't know yet."

Earlier in the year, as Bachmann rose in public opinion, her husband, Marcus, was forced to defend his Christian counseling business from claims that its therapies included "curing" people of being gay. With Bachmann now near the back of the GOP pack in polls, Marcus Bachmann joined her at the start of her bus tour of Iowa's 99 counties but was quickly replaced by four of their five children.

"My husband had to go home. We're small-business owners and someone had to go home and mind the store," Bachmann told one crowd. And at one point, Bachmann, who began losing her voice in the middle of the jam-packed tour, turned over the microphone to son Harrison, a teacher who talks up his family's ties to the state, and teased: "Harrison, say some nice things about me and you'll get extra cookies."

In Paul's case, he's probably hoping validation from his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a favorite of the tea party, will give him a boost with that pivotal constituency in Iowa. Rand Paul is also appearing in a television ad for his father.

Romney's five-son family and wife of more than four decades have long been a part of his presidential campaigns. But the spotlight has been shining more brightly on his wife and their brood in recent weeks as the campaign seeks to cast the former Massachusetts governor as a person of "steadiness and constancy" while drawing a contrast with the thrice-married Gingrich.

Ann Romney also has spoken openly about how her husband supported her through her struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Huntsman's wife and the couple's three oldest daughters are near-constant companions in New Hampshire, the only state where the former Utah governor is earnestly campaigning. His daughters recently generated a huge amount of buzz with a video spoof of an ad by former rival Herman Cain. They donned oversized glasses and fake mustaches to look like Cain's campaign manager.

"We are shamelessly promoting our dad like no other candidate's family has," one daughter said in the ad. "But then again, no one's ever seen a trio like the Jon2012 girls."

Send Christmas card to blind Chinese pro-life dissident

Last week actor Christian Bale drew attention to the plight of Chinese pro-life dissident Chen Guangcheng, who was previously jailed and is now under house arrest for documenting forced abortions and sterilizations in his country.

This week Women?s Rights without Frontiers, a pro-life group that has been trying to help Chen, announced it is launching a Christmas card campaign to support Chen.

?Send a Christmas card to encourage Chen Guangcheng and his family,? wrote WRWF president Reggie Littlejohn in a press release.? ?Let them know that you are thinking about them and support them.? Also, let the Chinese Communist Party and the local officials know that Chen has supporters from all over the world.?

I asked Littlejohn how she would know Chen received our cards. She responded in an email:

Inventor of SecurID: 'Windows 8 Picture Password is Fisher-Price Toy'

The Windows 8 feature that logs users in if they touch certain points in a photo in the right order might be fun, but it's not very good security, according to the inventor of RSA's SecurID token.

"I think it's cute," says Kenneth Weiss, who now runs a three-factor authentication business called Universal Secure Registry. "I don't think it's serious security."

The major downside of the picture password is that drawing a finger across a photo on a touch screen is easy to video record from a distance - making it relatively easy to compromise, he says. Designers of alpha-numeric passwords recognize this danger and have responded to it by having password characters appear as dots on the screen so the password can't be copied down.

Designers of Windows 8's picture login have made a traditional password an alternative, perhaps in acknowledgement of this shortcoming, he says.

Other problems include backing up the touch pattern that is the login. "To put down a description of the sequence is possible, but that's a lot of writing," he says.

All in all, "It's more like a Fisher-Price toy than a serious choice for secure computer access," he says.

Still, it's better than nothing, he says, and it is raising awareness of login security.

Windows 8 (See also: "8 hot features in Windows 8") is the next version of the Windows operating system, now due for beta release in February. It's expected to be generally available later next year featuring touchscreen navigation and commands as well as support for tablets. Not all apps that run on Windows 7 will be compatible with the touchscreen capabilities, but mouse and keyboard devices will enable all apps that ran on Windows 7.

The new operating system shoots for power efficiency, better security and compatibility with ARM-based chips (read tablets and next-generation PCs), all of which could make Windows 8 attractive to businesses.

FOR KIDS: Science fair as a family affair

Parents share their tips on helping kids prepare for a science fair

Web edition : Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

As temperatures drop and days grow shorter, middle and high school students across the country begin gearing up for science fair season. While these competitions typically take place in the spring, the qualifying projects can take several weeks or even months to plan, carry out and summarize. That means late fall and early winter are an ideal time for students to start brainstorming project ideas.? ?

But science fair planning can overwhelm many students. Some become intimidated at the prospect of designing a project that?s never been done before. For others, this event may be their first experience in long-term project coordination. And for parents, it?s often a time spent wondering how best to help their children without taking over the project themselves.

The good news is that a student?s own interests can lay the groundwork for a great science fair project. And by knowing what those interests are, parents often can help steer students toward projects that will prove personally meaningful and rewarding.

Octavia Spencer shares her success with all actors (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? After 15 years as "a rank-and-file actor," Octavia Spencer is stepping into Hollywood's gilded spotlight.

The 39-year-old actress was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for her turn as sassy maid Minny Jackson in "The Help." Her co-stars Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain also earned acting nods from both groups, and the film is up for best picture at the Globes and best ensemble at the SAG Awards.

"The only word I can really use to describe this feeling is overwhelming," she said. "It is overwhelming and wonderful."

Though Spencer said she tried not to "invest emotionally" in Hollywood's awards process because "I just didn't want anything to diminish what we've all been able to accomplish," she was moved to tears by the SAG and Globes recognition.

"No matter what happens, the fact that we've had some stardust rain down on us over the past couple of days, it's just, it's pretty..." she paused, collected herself, "overwhelming."

She lauded director and screenwriter Tate Taylor, her longtime friend, and the cast mates she now considers family, including Davis.

"I'm thrilled for Viola," she said. "I consider myself a rank-and-file actor who's been kicking the can around for 15 years. Viola is a trained Juilliard actress who has been doing stage and now the world is getting to see what she can do... I'm glad that she's having her moment and she deserves this moment."

Spencer's "kicking the can" has included numerous appearances in such TV series as "Ugly Betty," "Big Bang Theory," "CSI," "Just Shoot Me!" "Chicago Hope" and "The X-Files," and in the feature films "What Planet Are You From?" "Halloween II" and "The Sky is Falling." Upcoming features include "Lost on Purpose," "Smashed," "The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife" and "Girls! Girls! Girls!"

But "The Help" is by far her highest-profile project to date ? and the result of love and perseverance, Spencer said, noting the novel was rejected 60 times before it became a best-seller.

Taylor was lifelong friends with author Kathryn Stockett and got the rights to the book before it was published, but with only one feature film to his credit, most studios refused to work with him.

Finally, producer Chris Columbus signed on, then DreamWorks. "The Help" was a hit when it was released over the summer and has been showered with honors ever since.

Spencer wishes she could share the success with all of her acting colleagues.

"I wish this for all of my fellow actors, rank-and-file actors who have been kicking it around as long as I have," she said. "I hope that I am a beacon of hope for them, because really and truly, they know what it's like to have constant rejection and to have hope, so hopefully I will represent that for them."
