Reddit users helped fulfill a terminal cancer patient's wish

A young man by the name of?Nachu Bhatnagar has terminal cancer and may die before the summer's end. When asked?what he wants to do before he dies, he immediately explained that he wants to finish?reading Harry Turtledove's "The War That Came Early" series and discover how it ends.?
The final two books in the series have yet to be published.?
But that fact didn't stop one of?Bhatnagar's close friends from trying his best to fulfill the wish, nor did it prevent a group of Reddit users from doing everything they could to help.
Bhatnagar's friend ??whose name appears to be Colton Jang?? began the entire quest by explaining the situation in a Reddit post.?
"My friend has terminal cancer and may die by June. I?m trying to fulfill one of his last wishes. Is there any way to obtain a copy of a book that hasn?t been released yet," he asked. He attached a screenshot of the instant messenger conversation in which?Bhatnagar revealed his wish?along with a?copy of the letter he was sending to?Turtledove:
It is my duty as a friend to do whatever I can to fulfill [Bhatnagar's] last wishes. Is it at all possible for you to send him copies of the remaining books in the series? I understand the risks involved in sending an advance copy of your books to him and I understand the potential copyright issues and backlash from publishers. That said, my friends needs some good luck and kindness to balance out the awful streak he's been on, and I couldn't imagine a better person for it than his favorite author.
The Reddit post was quickly flooded with comments and suggestions.?One Reddit user wrote that he sent a copy of the post to Turtledove's daughters, another sent a message to a close friend of the Turtledove family, and so on. Hundreds upon hundreds of comments were posted until?an author who happens to have the same publisher as Turtledove chimed in:
PM [private message] me?? my editor can get you an ARC. Need your address (we can chat by phone if you want to make sure I'm legit).
Jang updated his original post to say that the ARC?? an "advance reading copy"?? of the second-to-last book in Turtledove's series was in the mail.
A couple of days later the following video was uploaded to YouTube. In it, Jang presents?Bhatnagar with the advance reading copy and tells him that Turtledove will be calling him to discuss the remainder of the series:

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) ? Massimiliano Blardone mastered a fast-deteriorating course Sunday to beat World Cup overall leader Marcel Hirscher in a giant slalom.
Blardone trailed Hirscher by 0.02 seconds after the first leg, then raced through soft, rutted snow to complete the two runs in 2 minutes, 33.77 seconds.
It was the 32-year-old Italian's second win of the season and he celebrated by leaping onto the air-bag fences surrounding the finish area.
"It's another oldie who has won today," Blardone said in Italian after veterans Didier Cuche and Benjamin Raich won super-G races the previous two days.
Hirscher was 0.16 behind in second, and Austrian teammate Hannes Reichelt soared from 11th to finish third, trailing Blardone by 0.82. Ted Ligety of the U.S. was ninth.
Bode Miller sat out his third straight race on the Nationale course to help his left knee heal after minor surgery last week. U.S. teammates Tommy Ford and Tim Jitloff capitalized on early starts in the second leg and finished 19th and 22nd.
By gaining 80 World Cup points, Hirscher extended his lead in the overall and discipline standings with just three weeks of racing to go. He leads by 92 overall from Ivica Kostelic, the defending overall champion from Croatia who is sidelined after knee surgery.
"It's perfect," Hirscher said, despite letting his morning lead slip. "I didn't lose 20 points, I won 80. In GS races, it's very difficult in these soft conditions."
Blardone, Hirscher and Ligety, the defending GS champion, have combined to win all seven races in the discipline this season.
Ligety was 1.29 behind Blardone after being seventh fastest in the morning. His fears of finding tough conditions in the warm afternoon sun proved correct ? only four top-10 racers from the first leg held their place in the final top 10.
Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway had been third but flipped through the air after his right wrist caught a gate. He reported feeling neck pains but no serious injury.
Hirscher built a commanding position in the World Cup standings, with third-placed Beat Feuz of Switzerland failing to qualify for the second run and now trailing by 95 points.
Feuz can regain ground next weekend when three speed races are scheduled at Kvitfjell, Norway, while technical specialist Hirscher stays home to train on the World Cup finals course at Schladming.
Hirscher leads Ligety by 132 points in the GS standings with two races left. The American has won the title three of the past four seasons.
Blardone is third, 187 back, having added victory on a hill where he skied during childhood vacations to his win at Alta Badia, Italy, in December. His seventh career World Cup win came after days of dedicated training on soft snow.
"I'm good at checking the weather forecasts," Blardone said. "I came here and was completely at home with the conditions."
Cuche and Raich stood eighth and sixth after the first run but could not find speed on the slushy surface. In his final home World Cup race before retiring, Cuche finished 15th. In the finish area, 13,000 spectators chanted his name.
"I'm a bit disappointed," said the 37-year-old Swiss star, who blew kisses to the grandstands. "I wanted to give them a better result."

Jury pool shrinks in Rutgers webcam case
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.?? The jury pool for the trial of a former Rutgers University student accused of using a webcam to spy on his roommate's intimate encounter with another man was cut Tuesday after the judge reviewed answers from questionnaires.
Just more than 100 potential jurors for the trial of 19-year-old Dharun Ravi remained by midday. The judge and lawyers in the case agreed to eliminate 82 members from the pool because of the views they expressed on the questionnaires.
Twelve people and at least two alternates will ultimately sit on the jury. It's not clear when the trial will begin.
Ravi is charged with 15 criminal counts. The most serious are two bias intimidation counts that accuse him of acting against roommate Tyler Clementi because he's gay. He also faces charges of invasion of privacy and tampering with a witness and evidence.
Clementi's story touched off a national discussion about bullying of young gays after he committed suicide in September 2010 by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, days after the intimate encounter.
Judge Glenn Berman said Tuesday that most of the roughly 190 prospective jurors who filled out questionnaires last week said they had heard about the case.
He dismissed those Middlesex County residents who indicated that they had made up their minds.

Also on Tuesday, Berman fixed an error that could have had an impact on the trial: A hindering apprehension charge was changed from a third-degree crime to a second-degree crime.
Normally, that technical change would mean that a defendant who's found guilty would likely face a prison sentence. But Berman said he could still view that charge as a third-degree crime for sentencing purposes if Ravi is found guilty of it. He said he would decide that issue later if he needs to.
Charged with invasion of privacy, not with death
Ravi has not been charged with causing Clementi's death. Instead the main charge is invading Clementi's privacy, which is unlikely to result in prison time for a first offender. For a hate crime conviction, which carries a sentence of up to five to 10 years, prosecutors must prove Ravi attempted to intimidate Clementi for being gay. Ravi also faces related charges of tampering with witnesses and evidence.

Ravi has pleaded not guilty to all the charges, and has rejected a plea deal with prosecutors that could have helped him avoid a prison sentence. Instead he now risks up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
"Most hate crimes are committed against strangers, not against roommates or against good friends or neighbors," Jack Levin, a professor of criminology at Northeastern University, said in an interview.
Successful prosecutions typically rely on racial or homophobic slurs made as the crime is committed, graffiti left at the scene, the possession of hateful propaganda by the offender, or an offender's previous history of hate crimes.
"In this case there apparently are none of those indicators to be found," Levin said. "It doesn't sound like a very strong case."
On Sept. 19, 2010, Clementi had arranged to have a man in his mid-20s identified in court only as M.B. to come over, and asked Ravi if he would leave the room. Ravi agreed. He went to the room of Molly Wei, a friend across the corridor, and used her computer to access his webcam through video-chatting software.
Wei later told investigators Ravi was alarmed at having to leave his room for a visit from an unknown older man and wanted to know what was going on. She said they saw images of Clementi kissing M.B., and, shocked, turned the video feed off within seconds. Ravi posted a message on his Twitter account:
"Turned on iChat and saw my roommate making out with a dude. Yay."
Defense points to Clementi's jokes
To secure the bias intimidation conviction, prosecutors will need to convince a jury Ravi invaded Clementi's privacy and that he did so to intimidate him because he was gay.
Ravi's lawyers have pointed to transcripts of Ravi's online conversations with friends showing that, after the gossip value of discovering his roommate's sexuality has apparently faded, he concludes that Clementi being gay is "no big deal."
Ravi's lawyers have said in court documents there is no evidence Clementi was intimidated by Ravi's actions. He was open about his sexuality with friends and had come out to his parents, according to Clementi's chat transcripts.
After learning from Ravi's Twitter post he had been seen on the webcam, Clementi said in an online chat with a friend he felt "violated" at first, but soon after joked about the incident, saying he found it "sooo funny," and laughed when the friend suggested it could be considered a hate crime.
Nonetheless, he filed a formal request to switch roommates and posted his concerns on an Internet forum for gay men, which prosecutors are likely to point to as evidence he felt intimidated.
Even after realizing his encounter with M.B. had been briefly viewed by Ravi, Clementi invited M.B. back to his room two days later and again asked Ravi to excuse himself, although this time he was careful to make sure Ravi's computer was unplugged.

The event is sponsored by Apigee, Bizdom U, Core3 Solutions, Absopure, Billhighway and Detroit Venture Partners. DVP is providing space at the Madison Building, and Associate Vice President Jake Cohen helped plan the event. He expects people from other venture companies to be present as well, and he thinks the possibility for capital should be both daunting and exciting to the weekend's participants.
