Living Healthy Day 33: Soup catastrophe | Living Healthy | The Sun ...

Justin Mitchell's lunch on Tuesday consisted of Thai rice noodles, apple cinnamon rice cakes and water sweetened with lemon.

JUSTIN MITCHELL ? SUN HERALD

Cheat day

I look forward to Mondays for two reasons: to relax and enjoy the day and to be able to eat whatever I want for the day. Oh, and The Voice comes on. Well, maybe three reasons.

I had Chinese buffet with my mom and grandmother for lunch on Monday. It was pretty delicious, and I only allowed myself one plate of food and one plate of dessert. Typically, I could eat for days at a buffet. Peanut butter chicken was an option on the buffet line. I tried it and fell in love. I may try make healthy peanut butter chicken for dinner Tuesday evening. It would be a high-protein meal that would give me energy and help me keep on tracking at the gym.

I also had a biscuit from Popeye's chicken and a two slices of pizza.

Cheat day is always good, but my body pays for it the next morning. I wake up groggy, and my stomach almost always hurts. It's as if my body is getting used to eating healthy, and the bad foods on cheat day seem to send my body into shock. I need my cheat day for motivation, but I don't think that cheat day necessarily needs me.

No soup for you

I typically don't work on Tuesdays, but I decided to work this Tuesday so I could take off a day this weekend to attend a dear friend's wedding. As today was a busy news day, Tuesday kept me on the edge of my seat, and I left my lunch at home. However, reporter Christina Steube had me in her mind when she came to work because she brought me a Thai noodle soup bowl to try for lunch. Christina is also dieting, and she loves the 250-calorie bowls.

When it was time for lunch, I made the first mistake of opening the seasoning packet for the noodle bowl backwards. Thus, the powdered flavorings went askew in the bowl and on the table in the break room. Next, I added the liquid component of seasoning. To my dismay, I also dripped that all over the table. I finally added water and microwaved. By the time I got the bowl completely finished, I was starving.

As I went to sit down, the bowl became scalding hot, and I dropped it on the table. Water went everywhere.

Clearly, this soup bowl was testing me today.

However, the end product was light, flavorful and delicious.

I'm unsure as to how many of these noodle bows I will have, as they have an extremely high sodium level. However, I will be prepared next time for a soup catastrophe.

Two Connecticut M-F Properties Reel in $96M in Financing ...

October 30, 2012

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor

LCOR has secured $96 million in financing for Greenwich Place and Greenwich Oaks two apartment communities offering an aggregate 396 units in Greenwich, Conn. The real estate company relied on commercial real estate and capital markets services firm HFF to orchestrate the two-loan deal.

Jon Mikula, a senior managing director, and Jim Cadranell, managing director, spearheaded the HFF team. The firm arranged the fixed-rate financing for the Fairfield County properties through Allianz Real Estate of America, securing a $55 million and a $41 million loan collateralized by Greenwich Place and Greenwich Oaks, respectively. Allianz did not exactly have to go out on a limb in terms of risk; the previously unencumbered assets are Class A properties in a Class A suburban New York City locale.

Sited on 30 acres at 311 Putnam Green, Greenwich Place made its debut in 1969, but the 266-unit apartment complex is keeping up with the times, having most recently undergone a renovation in 2010. The 130-unit Greenwich Oaks, located on approximately 29 acres just two miles away at 219 Weaver St., is no relic of the past, either; the 41-year-old property was last upgraded in 2011.

In addition to recent makeovers, the apartment communities boast a location in a high-demand area, and there?s nothing like the prospect of steady, long-term cash flow to attract lenders.

?The [Connecticut] rental market remains robust as an alternative for would-be buyers,? Paul E. Breunich, president and CEO of William Pitt Sotheby?s International Realty, writes in a third quarter report. ?We expect rental prices to remain high and inventory levels low while we emerge from this period of housing weakness.?

According to numbers from commercial real estate analysis provider REIS Inc., the average annual apartment rent growth in Fairfield County is expected to be 4.6 percent through 2016, outpacing the northeast region and the nation, which are expected to experience rent growth of 4.4 and 4.1 percent, respectively.

Livestream for Producers Android app update brings live video broadcasts over wireless data connections

DNP Livestream for Producers Android app update brings live video broadcasts over wireless data connections

Android users of generation "Hey Look at Me!" can now add another tool to their arsenal of lifestyle sharing. The Livestream for Producers Android application received an update on Monday that introduces "single touch" sign up and logins through Facebook, a new app icon and some unnamed bug fixes. However, the most noteworthy addition here is the ability to run live ad-free videos over 3G and 4G data connections. Requiring Android 2.2 or higher, this free media streaming app might be an ideal companion for folks looking to incriminate co-workers at this year's Halloween costume party -- all in good fun of course. Just be sure to remember who signs your paycheck before you decide to take a broadcast live.

Mood of the Nation: Business owner spending less

MIAMI (AP) ? On the eve of the 2012 elections, The Associated Press interviewed dozens of Americans to try to gauge the economic mood of the nation. People were asked about jobs, housing, gas prices, retirement and other issues. Among them was Hilda Mitrani, 51, of North Miami Beach, Fla. The Great Recession and slow economic recovery have devastated her public relations and marketing business. But Mitrani says positive signs are emerging.

___

Mitrani's long-time clients are spending cautiously, if at all ? and she has had to adjust her own lifestyle as a result.

She delays making home repairs. She keeps an eye on the thermostat. And only occasionally, she's able to treat herself to a new pair of shoes.

"It's been a hard recovery," says the single mother of two children.

Mitrani is among many feeling squeezed by a painfully sluggish economic rebound. Unemployment remains high at 7.8 percent. Average pay trails inflation. And the economy is growing too slowly to accelerate hiring.

Mitrani's clients in the nonprofit and health care sectors are reluctant to spend on public relations when they may need that money for supplies or other basics, she says. So Mitrani, who used to employ two part-time workers, now runs the business alone.

But even with lower overhead, she still feels squeezed.

"You're not sure if you're going to get paid this month or next month, or if you're going to have a new client to replace the project that you just finished," she says.

Routine utility bills feel like a burden. And thinking about college tuition payments ? her daughter is a junior at Washington University in St. Louis ? is "nerve-wracking."

More than anything else, though, she laments the endless string of payments for insurance. "Between the car, the house, the health ? so much of the income goes to insurance that it's hard to get ahead," she says.

She rations healthcare for herself to cut down on co-pays. And when her daughter needed medical attention earlier this year, she found herself saying dueling prayers in the hospital.

"Please don't let this cost an arm and a leg. And please let her be OK," Mitrani recalls saying.

Mitrani is resigned to the fact that her retirement won't be as comfortable as her parents'. Compared with her parents' generation, Mitrani believes Americans today are a bit more materialistic and might need to ratchet back expectations a bit. There's evidence this is happening: Consumers have been saving and reducing debts more, and spending less, than before the financial crisis.

Still, Mitrani sees some reason for optimism. The stock market is coming back: The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index is up more than 12 percent this year. And slowly, clients are beginning to inquire about using her services in 2013.

"They're asking for proposals and planning expansions," she says. "They're starting to talk about the future."

50+ Lifestyles ? YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY Davenport, Iowa Office

By Karen Cole
Social Security District Manager
Davenport, Iowa

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS TO www.socialsecurity.gov

Kids are back in school, and in the breezy afternoons, you can find them raking leaves, or jumping in them. It?s that time of year. Soon, on the way to Thanksgiving dinner, children may be singing in the back seats of cars: Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother?s house we go ?

Did you know that the original song had children in a horse-drawn sleigh on their way to Grandfather?s house?

A lot has changed since those days. Take the Internet, for example. A generation ago, no one would have considered mapping out directions on the web, or ordering a package online, delivered directly to the destination. No one would have imagined doing business with Social Security with a computer.

This Thanksgiving Day, after you?ve enjoyed your feast and exhausted conversation, why not show Grandma and Grandpa how easily they can use www.socialsecurity.gov to avoid unneeded trips to a Social Security office.

For starters, you can take them to the online Retirement Estimator, a tool that helps them figure out how much they may get in monthly benefits depending on when they retire. It?s available at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator.

Or tell them about the hot new service everyone is talking about: the new online Social Security Statement. It provides a record of past earnings, along with projected earnings for future years to give an estimate of future Social Security benefits. It?s available at www.socialsecurity.gov/mystatement.

You also can show them our library of online publications containing all the information they need to know about an array of Social Security, retirement, and Medicare subjects. You can see our publications at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs. If they were thinking about retirement, you may want to show them just how knowledgeable you are by suggesting they read the publication, When To Start Receiving Retirement Benefits, at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10147.html.

And if they?re ready to retire, take them to www.socialsecurity.gov/applyonline, where they can apply online for retirement benefits in as little as 15 minutes ? that may be less time than it takes to brew a pot of coffee and slice a pumpkin pie. Once they click the ?submit? button, they?re done. (And so are you.)

As you?re preparing to go over the river, through the woods, or across town to visit family this Thanksgiving Day, consider inviting www.socialsecurity.gov to the gathering.

THE HUNT IS AFOOT FOR MEDICARE PART D

Hunting season is open. But rather than hunting for game, may we recommend setting your sights for the Part D Medicare prescription drug plan that?s best for you? You?ll have more time than usual this year, because open season is lasting longer than usual.

If you currently are enrolled in Medicare and are considering changes to your Medicare Part D plan, act now. The ?open season? runs from October 15 to December 7.

The Medicare Part D prescription drug program is available to all Medicare beneficiaries to help with the cost of medications. Joining a Medicare prescription drug plan is voluntary, and participants pay an additional monthly premium for the coverage.

While all Medicare beneficiaries can participate in the prescription drug program, some people with limited income and resources also are eligible for Extra Help to pay for monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments. The Extra Help is
estimated to be worth about $4,000 per year. Many people qualify for these big savings and don?t even know it.

To figure out whether you are eligible for the Extra Help, Social Security needs to know your income and the value of any savings, investments, and real estate (other than the home you live in). To qualify, you must be receiving Medicare and have:
? Income limited to $16,755 for an individual or $22,695 for a married couple living together. Even if your annual income is higher, you still may be able to get some help with monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments. Some examples where your income may be higher include if you or your spouse:
?Support other family members who live with you
?Have earnings from work
?Live in Alaska or Hawaii
? Resources limited to $13,070 for an individual or $26,120 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. We do not count your house or car as resources.

You can complete an easy-to-use online application for Extra Help at www.socialsecurity.gov. Click on Medicare on the top right side of the page. Then click on ?Get Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs.? To apply by phone or have an application mailed to you, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask for the Application for Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs (SSA-1020). Or go to your nearest Social Security office.

And if you would like more information about the Medicare Part D prescription drug program, visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY 1-877-486-2048).

So this open season, hunt for something that could put an extra $4,000 in your pocket ? bag the best Medicare prescription drug plan for you and see if you qualify for the Extra Help through Social Security. That?s a trophy worth displaying in your den.

RETIREMENT QUESTION AND ANSWER

Question:
What is the earliest age that I can apply for my Social Security retirement benefits?

Answer:
The earliest age to receive retirement benefits is 62, but you can apply up to three months beforehand. If you retire at age 62 today, your benefit would be about 25 percent lower than what it would be if you waited until you reach full retirement age.

Even if you are not ready to retire, you still should sign up for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday. You can do both online at www.socialsecurity.gov/applyonline.

Water System Improvement Program Sunol Valley: Teamwork pays off

It?s not quite like a Giants baseball game out here, but our crews at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project sure know a thing or two about the importance of teamwork.? Just like base coach Tim Flannery uses hand signals to communicate on the field, our Calaveras Dam workers use the same method to communicate to each other at the site. Since Friday, we started filling concrete in the new shaft which is an important function for the new Calaveras Dam.? The shaft is part of the new intake tower which moves water from the Calaveras Reservoir through the adit tunnels eventually treated to become our drinking water. The level of noise and limited visibility in the shaft can be challenging, so our workers rely on hand signals and radio communication to mobilize.? Our workers signal the crane to lower a bucket full of concrete into the shaft, and then workers below fill the wall forms with concrete. The shaft is 152 feet deep and over?720 cubic yards of concrete will be placed once it is completed. It takes approximately a week for the concrete to reach a specified strength before continuing, therefore the concrete work will be completed in 16 foot lifts at a time through March 2013.

LOGAN COUNTY, Okla. ? Mother of two, Kelly Shipley has been living on edge lately.?

She said, ?It?s scary; I don?t feel safe anymore.?

Authorities in Logan and Oklahoma counties said there has been a dramatic spike in home burglaries recently.

The crooks are not only breaking into cars; they have become even more brazen.

Logan Co. Chief Deputy Rob Groseclose said, ?As of late, we?ve had people take garage door openers to burglarize your home.?

Authorities?said the victims are essentially giving criminals a key to their house.

The intruders are walking around neighborhoods and checking car doors.

When they find an unlocked car, they go straight to the visor and your garage door opener.

Groseclose said, ?That? gives them?access to your house while you?re sleeping.?

It happened Tuesday morning to Angela MacKinnon?s neighbor.?

?She yelled and they left,? MacKinnon said. ?But she later found they had taken her purse.?

There have been about a half-dozen similar reports recently in northwest Oklahoma County.

?Society is so used to that,? Groseclose said ?We know where our garage door opener is all the time but so do the bad guys. So that?s a target they?ll look for, the opener. It?s a key to your house, absolutely.?

Police encourage homeowners to take every measure of security including locking the door from the garage to your house and keeping that remote out of sight.

Kelly Shipley isn?t taking and chances.

?We make sure the door is locked and the garage is shut at all times,? she said. ?We are keeping an eye on everything.?

Dangling crane swinging in storm winds

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City evacuated neighbors of a nearly completed, 90-story luxury apartment building on Monday after the top of a construction crane collapsed in high winds, prompting fears the crane's boom could crash to the ground.

With the city bracing for massive storm Sandy, which made landfall in southern New Jersey later on Monday, the crane's upper arm dangled over the street near Central Park from what should eventually become the city's tallest residential building, where condominium units will start at $16.75 million.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the crane had been inspected on Friday, as other construction cranes had ahead of the storm, and that the cause of the accident remained unknown. Engineers went to the top of the building to examine the crane but stopped short of attempting any repairs, officials said.

"It's conceivable that nobody did anything wrong whatsoever and it wasn't even a malfunction, it was just a strange gust of wind," Bloomberg told a news conference.

"Just because it was inspected, that doesn't mean that God doesn't do things or that metal doesn't fail. There's no reason to think at this point in time that the inspection wasn't adequate," he said.

Firefighters closed streets for several blocks surrounding the site, evacuated 300 apartments in three buildings and were preparing to evacuate more, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Passers-by stared in amazement and apprehension, while some stopped to take pictures of the building that will feature $90 million duplexes.

"It's fascinating, I saw it on TV and came out to see it. But it's also scary. If it happened there, who knows where else it could happen," said Sam O' Keeffe, 25, a bartender who lives in the neighborhood.

The building, known as One57 and designed by Christian de Portzamparc, has been climbing ever higher and, at 1,004 feet, it will tower over other buildings near Columbus Circle at the southwest corner of Central Park.

Ninety-two luxury condominiums will sit atop a five-star Park Hyatt hotel.

Two of those units were under contract for more than $90 million each, The New York Times reported last month, citing the president of building developer, Extell Development Company.

Extell, which did not respond to requests for comment on Monday, announced in May it had reached $1 billion in sales and that half of its units had sold in six months. Occupancy was set for 2013.

The contractor was Australia's Lend Lease Construction and Canada's Pinnacle Industries own the crane, said Mary Costello, a spokeswoman for Lend Lease.

"We are working with structural engineers and the DOB (Department of Buildings) on evaluating any additional measures that can be taken to secure the boom and crane structure," Costello said.

In April, a 30-year-old laborer died at a subway construction site after the boom of a subway crane came off and crashed down. Yonkers Contracting Co. Inc. was cited with 10 serious violations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as a result.

That same month, a Manhattan state judge acquitted a construction company owner of manslaughter for a crane collapse that killed two workers in May 2008 and raised concerns about high-level building projects in New York.

In that case, a nearly 200-foot-tall crane snapped in half and crashed onto a building on the Upper East Side. In March 2008, a giant crane fell and crushed a residential building in Manhattan, killing seven people.

In 1987, a domestic cat rescued from a shelter in Montana, USA surprisingly gave birth to a curly-haired kitten. The kitten ended up mating with a Persian male and giving birth to a mixture of curly-haired and normal-haired kittens, which strongly suggested that the mutation in the rescued cat was dominant in nature: its presence on one of the two copies of the gene involved is sufficient to cause cats to have curly hair. The curly-haired kittens were attractive and were soon recognized as a new breed: the Selkirk Rex.

There are currently registered Selkirk Rex breeders throughout the world and their cats are extremely popular. Surprisingly, though, until recently there had not been any attempt to characterize the mutation responsible. Together with colleagues at the University of California, Davis and at Agrobiogen in Germany, Serina Filler and Gottfried Brem at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna have investigated the new breed and now present an initial description of the underlying mutation.

Because the mutation is dominant, Selkirk Rex cats may be homozygous (i.e. carry two copies of the mutation) or heterozygous (with one mutated and one "normal" copy of the gene). In fact, heterozygous cats are more popular as they show shorter ears, a more rounded head and a fully curled coat, all features that conform to the written standard for the breed. Homozygous cats tend to lose a large amount of hair when young, although they do not show bald areas of skin.

Filler examined the pattern of inheritance of these traits in over 150 cats, examining the DNA of most of them. She was able to show that the gene mutated in Selkirk Rex is distinct from mutations in other recognized breeds and she termed the mutation SADRE, or Selkirk Autosomal Dominant REx. Her analysis of the 20 available pedigrees suggested that the original mutation arose about eight or nine generations ago, which fits well with the breed's known history.

Cat breeds are very closely controlled and it is permitted to cross Selkirk Rex cats not only with other Selkirk Rexes but also with Persians, Exotic Shorthairs, British Shorthairs and British Longhairs. Because of this, the Selkirk Rex is a genetically diverse breed with a low coefficient of inbreeding. It seems to be closely related to Persian and British Shorthair cats, presumably reflecting the frequency with which cats of these breeds have been crossed with Selkirk Rex animals in the past. The influence of the British Shorthair seems more pronounced and this is consistent with the overall body shape of the animals.

Filler's results confirm that the Selkirk Rex breed arose from a spontaneous mutation in a single cat around 25 years ago. As the mutation is dominant it has been comparatively easy to retain and the breed appears to have a healthy level of genetic diversity because of the number of crosses with other breeds. As Filler says, "the present level of diversity within the Selkirk Rex would seem to be sufficient for us to consider limiting the number of other breeds to which the cats may be crossed. This would help it to develop a unique head and body shape and made it even more distinct."

Dana White is a really good tipper

UFC president Dana White is known as many things: entrepreneur, visionary, hothead, Pinkberry fan. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he also deserves the title great tipper.

White and the UFC have apparently cut ties with the Palms, the Las Vegas Casino that has hosted several of the UFC's smaller events. White's credit line was reportedly cut, and the biggest loser from the fallout is the staff. White was known to give exorbitant tips to dealers and waitstaff.

"He changed people's lives," said one of the sources ... During one two-month hot streak, White tipped dealers more than $100,000, sources confirmed. "Anytime he came in, we knew it was a big payday," a Palms employee said.

The Palms and UFC fans are also losers in this because their venues were fun places to watch fights. They have intimate venues that are nothing like the arenas the UFC uses for some of their bigger pay-per-views and Fox shows.

It was perfect for "The Ultimate Fighter" finale and Ultimate Fight Night events. Fans could get closer to the action. Diego Sanchez's memorable win over Clay Guida sticks out as one of the fights that was perfect for the Palms. Every punch, every blood drop that flew, every kick was clear to every fan in the venue.

Q: I imagine you?re at least tri-lingual. Do you speak more languages?

A: I don?t speak any of the three properly, though! I had a chance to go back to Vietnam when I was a lawyer ? I worked there for four years ? so I speak Vietnamese in a very odd way: I can speak like a child or like a lawyer, but nothing in the middle.

Q: How old were you when you came to Canada? What year was that?

A: 1979, March, late March 1979. 27th of March, actually, one of the very few dates which I remember. I was 10.

Q: Did your family come to Qu?bec because your parents already spoke French?

A: In the refugee camp in Malaysia there was a representative from the Qu?bec government, and because we could speak French? well, my father spoke English also? but it was a natural choice because my mother could speak French.

Q: You write only in French, though.

A: I write in French. I have only written two books, so it?s difficult to say if I?m a writer, if I write in French, if it?s a habit.

Q: So that may change?

A: Well, I don?t know. No-no, I don?t think I?ll ever be able to write in Vietnamese because there are so many limits in my head in Vietnamese, and French is a language with which I learned how to love, so I guess it will always be French. And English? Well, I?ve never been to school in English so I?d never be able to write in English, I think.

Q: You probably don?t read a lot of English-language books then.

A: Actually I read more in English than in French nowadays. I don?t know why, I just have authors I love. My favourite authors are Tim O?Brien and Nicole Krauss, for example, and Heather O?Neill from Montr?al. So yeah, I do read a lot in English.

Q: And do you see a real difference, then, in Canadian literature in English and in French?

A: Absolutely, because even when I speak English I think differently than when I speak French, so the mentality, the way we see the world is a bit different. And also the language does shape us. And for sure when I speak Vietnamese I interpret the world differently. Not that I see the world differently but I think I would interpret it very differently. So absolutely, to me there are two cultures. It?s exactly the same thing with Vietnamese, now, when I read Vietnamese. How would I say it? Things are a lot less explicit in Vietnamese so there?s more place for interpretation than French or English where you?re allowed to name things by their name, you know, to call a cat a cat, for example. In Vietnam it?s very rare that you can call a cat a cat.

Q: We have to talk a while ?til we figure out what we?re talking about?

A: Yeah, for example in Vietnamese you cannot talk really about a sexual relationship. A doctor would ask you if you have been close with your husband and that would be the most that he can say. You know, that?s the closest that you can get to another person, ?Have you been close??

Q:?That?s interesting. I remember reading a novel long time ago where the man was talking about his difficulties in learning English, that he spoke some ? it was a fantasy novel ? he spoke something like French. He was used to putting the adjective before or after the noun, it didn?t matter, but in English there was a big difference between a house cat and a cat house.

A: There you go! See, that?s why. It is, yeah, it changes us.

Q: So you have spent your whole life, almost, between two cultures, all the time.

A: Absolutely. Or with two cultures. I don?t think that I?ve ever been really between. I think I embraced both with, I don?t know, with a feeling of richness more than being torn between the two.

Q: And your children are, essentially, world citizens.

A: It?s very sad that they don?t speak Vietnamese because they were born in Asia when? well, it sounds very strange, but they were born in Bangkok when we were based there, so my older one spoke Thai instead of Vietnamese because of his surrounding, his entourage, and so I don?t know if they had a chance to have two cultures like I do. But of course they?re very close to my parents for sure, they eat Vietnamese a lot, and the values, I think they do have the values but not the culture or the language.

Q: They speak to their grandparents in French?

A: Yeah, my parents got lazy and didn?t force Vietnamese on them! They have become soft, they?re not forcing them to make an effort to speak Vietnamese.

Q: Ru is not your life, but a lot of its contents were part of your memories.

A: Of course. My first motivation was to play with words, to be with words, to write, and so when you write there?s the technical side to it where you choose the words and the way you shape the sentence and the structure, and so you play with the story itself. I allowed myself to be fictive, in a way. From the first line, you know: I was born during the Tet Offensive at all, I was born in September, ?68, not February, ?68, so I was just conceived at that point! But it was important for me to talk about that event if I talk about Vietnam.

Q: If you were born in Vietnam in 1968 what you would remember about Vietnam in 1968 was Tet.

A: Exactly. So to me I was born during the year of the Tet, because to all Vietnamese 1968 was the Tet Offensive. It was the turning point of that war, and it was the first big American deployment, and the war became full-blown at that point in time. So it was important to talk about that. Of course many things are true in the sense that it?s the way that I saw or understood, but there are so many stories that I had to break into smaller pieces to make it readable. And then certain others I had to put two or three together to make it interesting enough.

Q: The novel is one image after another, almost the way people really remember things, not in a linear fashion, and you made your own narrative out of those images. I think this is what the Giller jury was getting at when it praised you for reinventing the immigrant story.

A: I was surprised. I thought that my story was so, you know, ordinary and flat! Yeah, and I didn?t know where I reinvented!

Q: Well, two of them are immigrants themselves,?so I think that might have really struck a chord in them, and they?re thinking, ?Well, it?s not the, ?Grandma showed up on the dock in 1897 and then we went here and then this happened,?? it?s different, it?s not linear, and it?s more of a kaleidoscope. I think that?s what they meant by it.

A: And I think maybe also because it?s so imperfect, that I don?t give many facts. I only see small details, ever.

Q: You make a point regarding the difference between the narrator?s name and her mother?s name, which is fractional. Is that the sort of thing Vietnamese pay attention to a lot, these tiny things in names that foreigners miss?

A: Yes, absolutely. Our names have meanings, so the name is very important in this instance, there?s a meaning to it. So yes, but in my case, my personal case, there was no meaning: my mother just wanted to use her name and change the accent, that?s it. And luckily I?m the only girl, otherwise we would have exactly the same name here: if we were four then we would be four Kim Th?y, it would be Kim Th?y, Kim Th?y, Kim Th?y, Kim Th?y, right? But here you don?t write the accent so we wouldn?t be able to make the difference between us. Except for the birth date, I guess.

Q: Oh, I see. So you and any sisters would have had these slightly different names but they would have looked the same to Canadians.

A: Exactly the same, yes. I think I paid attention to the accent because I said to my mom that I prefer the other accent, l?accent grave instead of l?accent aigu, right? The meaning of l?accent grave, because the Th?y with l?accent grave means someone who is very soft and delicate, and I said, ?Why didn?t you give me that name? I would have been a delicate girl,? you know?

Q: And what does your name mean?

A: It has no meaning!

Q: Was the title of your novel?ru is a lullaby in Vietnamese, a small stream in French? in your mind for a long time before you wrote it?

A: Actually, no. It was saved under Document 1 for a long time. At one point I named it Apr?s la Pluie, After the Rain, because in French you have this expression, right, apr?s la pluie le beau temps, and it was also the name of a soap, Apr?s la Pluie. It sounded very fresh in my mind, and I wanted the book to be fresh, somehow. But at one point ? I don?t know why ? it became Ru very naturally. But Ru comes from the name of my former restaurant, Rue de Nam, so I just took one part of the restaurant and turned it into words. And it?s probably what I did a lot with the different stories, I would take one word from one chapter and send it into a different direction altogether.

Q: Was that a Vietnamese or a French restaurant?

A: It was a Vietnamese restaurant.

Q: So it meant lullaby?

A: Yes and no, because Rue de Nam, ?de? is really from the French, so it was a mixture. And ?Nam? is of course from Vietnam but it means also ?from the south?.

Q: You could translate that anyway way you wanted.

A: Exactly.

Q: The Lullaby of Vietnam, Flowing from Vietnam.

A: Yeah, when we wanted to be wicked, in Vietnamese you put different accents and it became ?Come flirt with my aunt number five?.
