One of the most common pitfalls for a new, excited blogger is overlooking the importance of properly?categorizing?their content.

Note: This post is not about what Categories you should use. That falls under ?What I Should?Be Blogging About.?

Too Many

To understand what blog covers, I generally look at the Categories to see what range of content it offers. I should be able to determine what your focus is?at a quick glance. If you have dozens of Categories, I fail to see a strength of topic and your expertise is clouded.

Too Few

Less is more, in the sense that the idea is to establish focus and expertise, but you can have too few. I?ve seen blogs that have the content categorized by ?Buyers?, ?Selling? and ?Mortgage?. At a minimum the Categories should at least be more descriptive and possibly segmented into some specific topics that fall under the umbrella of Buying, Selling and Mortgage.

Just Right

Typically, we recommend (to new bloggers) that one keeps their initial Category count to under 10. As content piles up, and focuses shift like the market, it?s understandable that this number will swell.

Garbage

Uncategorized and Miscellaneous

The default Category in the WordPress platform for content is ?Uncategorized?. Leaving this Category in place is a sign of laziness. And worse, it gives the impression that whatever is behind it is worthless.

Subjects vs Topics

A common mistake when categorizing content is the use of the subject, and not the topic for the category. For example, if I am blogging about preparing to sell my home around Christmas, this does not call for me to create a Category for ?Christmas?. I would only do so if I regularly dedicated a significant portion of my content to Christmas. ?Otherwise, ?Christmas? should be reserved as a ?Tag? and not a Category.

The One Timer

You had every intention of blogging on a topic, but it just hasn?t panned out. Now you have a lonely post sitting in a Category showcased along with all the other areas of real focus. Move that post to a different Category and it (the unwanted Category) will disappear.

One of my blogging?pet peeves?is when a post is placed?into several Categories. It looks terrible in the article credits (listing all the Categories that a post falls under). It looks like you are keyword stuffing by including all those Categories. And, it looks like you didn?t organize your site very effectively if a post falls under so many sections.

Back to the Local Newspaper analogy, an article about Baseball falls under Sports (and maybe Baseball), but not under Business, Arts, Food, Real Estate, Comics and Classifieds.

The Whimsical Category

Random musings need a Category as well. Don?t be afraid to include your whimsical posts into a catchall Category, especially if they veer from the general focus of your site. Real-life examples: ?Friday Fun?, ?Whimsical Wednesday?, ?Just Because? ? you get the idea.

Linking to Categories Within an Article

This is a bonus SEO tip, as well as just smart blogging. Link to a Category within an article at every opportunity. For example, when we mention SEO, we commonly link to our Blogging SEO Category. This allows that Category to be spidered again, as well as offering a valuable link to the reader.

Exclude Outdated Categories

Facebook underwriters to get 1.1 percent fee: source

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook will pay a fee of just 1.1 percent to underwriters of its initial public offering, a source with knowledge of the company's plans said on Monday.

News that the payout would be much slimmer than the typical underwriting fee came as Facebook executives highlighted the engagement of its massive user base during a meeting on Monday with about 100 analysts, investment bankers and others involved in the IPO.

Sources had said the company's underwriters would swallow a fee much lower than the 3 percent to 7 percent that is typical on Wall Street, because of the prestige of being associated with Silicon Valley's largest ever IPO, as well as the promise of being bankers in future to the world's largest social network.

Facebook's underwriters include Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Barclays and Allen & Co. Earlier this month, the company also named an additional 25 banks as underwriters.

Analysts and investment bankers from many of these firms attended a meeting with Facebook executives at the company's headquarters which lasted about three-and-a-half hours on Monday, according to two sources who attended.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg did not attend, but most of the company's other top management made presentations at the meeting, including Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman, head of product Chris Cox and vice president of engineering Mike Schroepfer, according to the people in attendance.

Facebook declined to comment.

One of the attendees described the meeting as a useful opportunity for Wall Street analysts and bankers to meet various executives at Facebook, but said there was little new information shared about Facebook's business or operations.

"It was a good first step for establishing a relationship," said the attendee, noting that Facebook invited the guests back for a second meeting in April to go over its business in more detail.

NO GUIDANCE GIVEN

The attendees, who were treated to a "very basic" breakfast spread, "the same as you'd expect at a Holiday Inn," did not want to be identified because they agreed not to discuss the meeting publicly.

Facebook, the world's No.1 social network with more than 845 million users, held the meeting at its new corporate home base in Menlo Park, California.

The company, which is competing with established Web giants such as Google Inc and Yahoo Inc for online advertising, is preparing to raise $5 billion in a closely-watched IPO that could value the company at between $75 billion and $100 billion.

Facebook discussed the number of daily and monthly active users on Facebook and highlighted levels of engagement. It did not give any guidance, another attendee said.

Analysts asked about 30 questions and some of those focused on how Facebook may make money from its large user base in the future. Facebook did not provide much information on future monetization plans, the person added.

The company also highlighted recent litigation by Yahoo and said that it would be filing a response soon, the person added. Ted Ullyot, Facebook's top attorney, was also at the meeting.

Facebook discussed how it buys components to build computer servers itself to save money, the person said.

News of the 1.1 percent IPO fee was reported earlier by Bloomberg.

While IPOs which raise less than $500 million typically generate underwriting fees of 7 percent, the fee percentage shrinks as an IPO grows in size.

Social game maker Zynga, which raised $1 billion in a December IPO, generated fees of roughly 3 percent for bankers.

Warm weather puts trees on fast forward

Unseasonably high temperatures have coaxed pollen from American elm trees, delicate green flowers from spicebush shrubs and a cloud of deep pink flowers from red maples, heralding the unusually early arrival of spring in central New York and reflecting a phenomenon happening across the eastern United States.

Trees and many other plants are developing flowers, and grasses are growing two to three weeks earlier than usual, raising the specter of a long and intense allergy season and concerns about what could happen to fruit crops -- both in the forest and the orchard -- if the budding fruit has to face a typical late spring frost.

"This warm weather might be really pleasant and some people might find it comforting," said Dr. Donald J. Leopold, chair of the Department of Environmental and Forest Biology at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, N.Y. "But when the weather is really altered from typical conditions, there are always winners and losers among all types of both plants and animals. With the many plant and animal species in the East, some will benefit and some will be adversely impacted with these unusually warm conditions."

Leopold studies woody and herbaceous native and non-native plants; in his 27 years at ESF, he has never seen these species bloom on campus before April 1. The consequences of this early blooming depend on the weather during the next month or so. Temperatures in the low 20s and lower can damage any developing fruit, such as the winged fruits of the silver maple, which are eaten by wildlife. More economically serious would be for apples and other fruit trees to bloom in mid- to late April then be subjected to a killing frost.

The early spring is not good news for allergy sufferers. Leopold said maples, willows, aspens, poplars, and other early spring blooming woody species are major contributors of wind-dispersed pollen that causes allergic reactions so allergy sufferers are likely to notice an early and prolonged allergy season.

A quick walk around the ESF Quad at the center of campus gave Leopold an opportunity to point out an American elm in front of the library that was already producing pollen, a row of spicebush shrubs sporting flowers of various sizes, and a red maple covered with male and female flowers.

Native willow planted in a rooftop demonstration project on ESF's Illick Hall has also bloomed early. A dogwood known as a Cornelian cherry, which produces fruit that various species of wildlife feed on, was past its blooming peak.

Elsewhere in the region, the silver maples peaked the week of March 12, weeks ahead of their average bloom time; some saucer magnolias are starting to open weeks ahead of their earliest bloom times in Central New York.

Leopold routinely collects twigs over ESF's spring break to teach his students identification techniques during his fall dendrology course. He said he has never seen the buds as swollen as they are this year.

With temperatures in Syracuse expected to be in the 70s again on March 20 and into the 80s March 21, the cycle is not about to change.

"Things are really going to pop this week," he said.
