Opening statements set in trial for Warren Jeffs (AP)

SAN ANGELO, Texas ? Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs' much-anticipated Texas trial begins in earnest Thursday, with prosecutors claiming he sexually assaulted girls he manipulated girls into "spiritual marriage," and defense attorneys countering that their client's religious freedoms were trampled.

Opening arguments are scheduled for Thursday, immediately following a hearing on whether evidence recovered when Jeffs was arrested after a 2006 traffic stop along a Nevada highway can be presented to jurors during the trial.

The 55-year-old Jeffs, head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is charged with sexually assaulting two girls, one under 17, one age 12. If convicted, he could go to prison for life. The charges stem from a 2008 police raid on a remote church compound.

Jeffs is also scheduled to go to trial for bigamy in October. His sect is a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism that believes polygamy brings exaltation in heaven. It has more than 10,000 members nationwide, and his high-powered defense team is being financed by an FLDS land trust believed to be worth more than $110 million.

Jeffs has had seven attorneys appear on his behalf in recent months, leading to a six-month delay to the start of his trial. All of Jeffs' lawyers have been tight-lipped about their approach to the case.

However, as jury selection began this week, Jeffs' latest attorney, Deric Walpole, gave the first public hint of Jeffs' planned defense, saying "my client's right to practice religion as he sees fit is in jeopardy."

Walpole also said Jeffs provides input on all motions he files.

Prosecutors have likewise refused to comment on their strategy, and it's unclear if the two young women at the center of the case will be called to testify. FLDS faithful have in the past not testified against fellow members.

On Wednesday, District Judge Barbara Walther denied a motion to suppress evidence seized at the Yearning For Zion ranch outside tiny Eldorado, Texas, in April 2008, clearing the way for a small mountain of documents, including marriage and birth records, to be presented.

At issue during Thursday's suppression hearing, meanwhile, will be the traffic stop nearly two years earlier. Jeffs was in hiding and on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list by August 2006, when Nevada police stopped a red Cadillac Escalade for having an obstructed license plate. The tall, lanky passenger in the back turned out to be Jeffs.

The vehicle was registered to another church member and the driver, Warren's brother Isaac Jeffs, authorized authorities to search the Escalade. Thursday's hearing is to determine whether Jeffs has the standing ? as someone other than the driver or owner ? to challenge the search of the vehicle, and can therefore block evidence seized from it from being used at his trial.

The massive 2008 raid at Yearning For Zion, a compound about 45 miles south of the oil and gas town of San Angelo, where Jeffs' trial is taking place, featured the FBI and police SWAT teams. More than 400 children were placed in protective custody, and women who live on the ranch appeared on airwaves across the country wearing their traditional, frontier-style dresses and hairdos from the 19th century.

Authorities moved in after receiving an anonymous call to an abuse shelter, alleging that girls were being forced into polygamist marriages. Based on that report, Walther signed the search warrant authorizing the raid.

The call turned out to be a hoax, made by a woman in Colorado, and the children were returned to their families. But once on the compound, police saw underage girls who were clearly pregnant ? prompting the charges against Jeffs and 11 other FLDS men.

All seven sect members who have been prosecuted so far were convicted, receiving prison sentences of between six and 75 years ? despite other FLDS members not testifying against them.

Defense attorneys had argued unsuccessfully that police had indications the call was phony, but hid them from Walther to ensure the search was authorized.

Walther found the defense had not raised enough doubts about the veracity of the search warrant, and denied its suppression motion.

Palestinian leader wants rallies to back UN bid (AP)

RAMALLAH, West Bank ? Invoking the Arab Spring, the Palestinian president on Wednesday urged his people to take to the streets for massive rallies in support of his government's bid to get the U.N. to recognize an independent Palestinian state.

The call by President Mahmoud Abbas for peaceful, "popular resistance" throughout the West Bank was likely to fuel Israeli concerns that the U.N. vote in September and any large demonstrations could spark a new round of violence.

In a sign of the worries, Israel announced Wednesday that it has begun work on a stronger fence to fortify the frontier between the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights and Syria. That was one of several areas on Israel's borders where Israeli forces caught by surprise used deadly force in recent months to quell pro-Palestinian protests inspired by the revolts upending the Arab world.

"All of us are talking about resistance and it must be every day," Abbas told a group of Palestinian politicians. "We are led by the protests of the Arab Spring, which we all say should be 'peaceful, peaceful,'" he said in an echo of the chant shouted by demonstrators across the Arab world.

"Make no mistake, we will reach what we desire without intervention from anybody," he said.

With peace talks stalled since 2008, the Palestinians have said they will instead ask the U.N. to recognize their state in September. Israel and the United States strongly oppose the move, saying Palestinian statehood should only be achieved through negotiations.

Abbas' determination to go to the U.N., along with his call to emulate protests in neighboring Arab countries, indicated that he was preparing for a confrontation with Israel and the U.S.

The vote would be largely symbolic, but the Palestinians believe it would send a powerful message to Israel and boost their position in future negotiations.

Both Israeli and Palestinian leaders have said they have no desire to see violence erupt in September. But Israeli military officials fear that street protests could inadvertently spin out of control and spark new violence.

Last week, an imprisoned Palestinian militant leader Marwan Barghouti also called for "millions" of people to take to the streets in nonviolent marches.

Israeli military officials say that troops have been training for months for September and that they are prepared for "all scenarios." The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are discussing secret preparations, have refused to elaborate on troop levels or special tactics they may use.

The military was caught by surprise when hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists in Syria burst through a fence and into the Golan Heights in May, with some managing to enter deep inside Israel before they were caught. Protesters also stormed the fence the following month. Several dozen protesters were killed in clashes with Israeli troops.

The crowds were protesting to commemorate the uprooting of hundreds of thousands of Arabs during the war surrounding Israel's 1948 creation, an event Palestinians refer to as the nakba, or catastrophe.

On Wednesday, Israeli military officials announced that the army is fortifying the fence running along its northern frontier with Syria in an effort to prevent a repeat of the deadly protests.

Israel's Channel 2 TV showed footage of what it said was five miles (eight kilometers) of an intended 75-mile (120-kilometer) stretch of fence being built in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. A military spokesman confirmed the report.

"We are getting ready for all possibilities from the mass gathering of people ... to attempts to infiltrate and carry out attacks to all-out war," said Col. Eshkol Chekroon, the Israeli commander of the Golan region.

Israel already has barriers separating itself from the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and along its southern border with Egypt.

The Palestinians want to build an independent state in Gaza, the West Bank and east Jerusalem ? territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to keep parts of the West Bank and opposes any withdrawal from east Jerusalem. Israel withdrew from Gaza, located on Israel's southwest flank, in 2005.

The Palestinians say they will not negotiate until Israel accepts its 1967 prewar lines as the basis of a peace deal. They also say that Israel must stop building Jewish settlements on occupied land.

With talks at a standstill, they plan on asking the U.N. to vote in favor of establishing a Palestinian state based on the 1967 lines.

They plan to turn first to the Security Council, whose decisions are legally binding. But with the U.S. expected to use its veto, the Palestinians then plan to go to the General Assembly, where they have an assured majority, for nonmember state status.

A resolution by the General Assembly, however, would have little more than symbolic value because it would not be legally binding.

Dan Peek, founding member of band America, dies (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Dan Peek, a founding member of the popular 1970s band America and singer of high harmonies on hits that included "A Horse With No Name" and "Ventura Highway," has died, his father said Tuesday. He was 60.

Peek's wife, Catherine, found him dead Sunday in bed in his home in Farmington, Mo., about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis, Milton Peek said. The cause of death was not known, and an autopsy was planned. Dan Peek suffered from arthritis, but it wasn't known if that was a contributing factor.

Peek, whose father was in the U.S. Air Force, had met the two other members of America ? Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley ? while attending high school in London. After signing a record contract, America was an almost instant sensation with songs featuring tight harmonies over catchy tunes. All told, America had three platinum and three gold albums, along with eight Top 40 hits, from 1971 through 1975.

"It was a joyous time for the three of us, full of excitement and laughter," Bunnell wrote on the band's website after learning of Peek's death. "We created lasting music together and experienced a life that we could never have imagined."

The group's first album in 1971 included the No. 1 hit "Horse With No Name." Other hits followed: "Tin Man," "Sister Golden Hair," and "Daisy Jane," among them. Peek played lead guitar on many of the songs, and wrote some of them, including the 1974 hit "Lonely People."

"Dan & his music will live on in the great songs he shared with us all," Beckley wrote on the group's website.

Peek had lived in Farmington since 1978, soon after he left the band. He also had a home in the Cayman Islands.

Peek was born Nov. 1, 1950, in Panama City, Fla. His father was in the Air Force and the family frequently moved. He met Bunnell and Beckley in the late 1960s.

"The three of them were Air Force brats," Milton Peek said.

In the late 1970s, Peek became disenchanted with the travel and lifestyle. "He was a Christian and he just got tired of the rat race," his father said.

He left America in 1977 and turned to Contemporary Christian music. His first solo album in 1979, "All Things Are Possible," reached No. 1 on the Contemporary Christian Music chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Beckley and Bunnell sang harmonies on the song, "Love Was Just Another Word." It marked the last time the three recorded together, according to Billboard, though they occasionally reunited on stage.

A fire in 1978 burned Peek's home and belongings in California. He moved to Farmington, an area where his father was once stationed, that same year.

Milton Peek said his son continued to write songs and record in the studio in his Farmington home until his death. He also operated a website and wrote a memoir, "An American Band: The America Story." Just last month he signed copies of the book at a Christian bookstore in Farmington.

Peek and his wife had no children. His funeral will be Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Farmington.

S. Korea says N. Korea rejects more joint tourism talks (AFP)

SEOUL (AFP) ? North Korea has rejected a South Korean offer of fresh talks to settle a festering dispute about a joint tourism resort in the communist country, a Seoul official said Wednesday.

Since late June the North has twice held talks with South Korean officials and businessmen about the fate of Seoul-owned hotels, restaurants and other properties at scenic Mount Kumgang.

After no progress was made, the South's unification ministry proposed fresh government-level talks this week. The North replied Tuesday it would consider such talks only when South Korean business delegates are present.

The North also warned that South Korean firms would have their assets "disposed of" unless they send a reply by Friday.

"To our regret, North Korea has virtually rejected our proposal," ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong-Joo told reporters.

She said the South's proposal was aimed at solving the dispute through sincere dialogue between authorities, because previous talks involving business people produced no agreement.

"We didn't want to see talks faltering again because of repeated demands from the North," she said, adding the ministry's proposal reflected the view of companies doing business in the resort.

Mount Kumgang, developed by the South's Hyundai Asan company, opened in 1998 as a symbol of reconciliation and once earned the impoverished North tens of millions of dollars a year.

The South suspended tours by its people after a North Korean soldier shot dead a Seoul tourist who had strayed into a restricted military zone there in July 2008.

It has said it will not resume the tours until the North allows an on-site investigation into the shooting and gives firm safety guarantees.

In protest at the refusal to restart the tours, the North later deprived Hyundai Asan of its monopoly over trips to the resort, where the company has invested millions of dollars.

Last year North Korea seized or sealed off several South Korean properties and last month it warned it would dispose of them.

Seoul has urged Pyongyang to respect all agreements with private businesses and to protect the ownership rights of South Korean firms.

I shone a spotlight on vaginas while promoting my book on motherhood. This generated embarrassment among senior members of my family. Many young moms are embarrassed too. My book is intended as a gift for new mothers, yet vagina issues don?t sit well on the wrapping.

In most cases (although not all), when a woman becomes a mother, it impacts many parts of her body, including her vagina.Yet mothers rarely discuss their vaginal secrets. For example, the practice of cutting a woman?s vagina in delivery, the conditions that increase or decrease the likelihood that this will happen, and the short-term and sometimes long-term discomfort that may arise, is all kept very hush-hush.My book is about revealing motherhood and the vagina story I use in my promotional materials is funny and not traumatic. I included it because it made a lot of women laugh and because it reveals a side of motherhood rarely discussed.And because I believe that knowledge?yes, knowledge about vaginas, too?is a gift.

I see my childhood home through mothers? eyes.

With my two young girls beside me, we walk through my parents? house,admiring my dad?s accomplishments and awards. They are visible signs ofworlds discovered, honors earned and collaborations completed.

Former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair's communications director, Alastair Campbell, was accused of exaggerating government documents in the lead-up to the Iraq war, and the party's former special adviser Damian McBride quit amid allegations he circulated scurrilous rumors about political opponents.

"We deplore the response of News International to the original investigation into hacking," said the Home Affairs committee, which has been grilling police officials about their decision not to reopen the hacking investigation in 2009 when other allegations came to light.

And it seems more is yet to come.

Only some 200 of the nearly 4,000 people whose information is believed to have been targeted have been notified by police, and detectives have started a separate inquiry into whether other news organizations over the years have breached data privacy laws.

Scotland Yard said Wednesday it was increasing the number of staff assigned to the phone-hacking inquiry from 45 to 60 to deal with a surge of inquiries and requests for assistance from the public and lawyers.

Among the evidence police want to examine are emails and other documents from an internal investigation into hacking conducted in 2007 by a law firm hired by News International, the British newspaper division of Murdoch's global News Corp. The firm, Harbottle and Lewis, had maintained client confidentiality meant it could not hand over the file.

On Wednesday, News International said it instructed Harbottle and Lewis to answer questions from police and lawmakers.

Murdoch flew out of London on Wednesday, a day after he and his son James were quizzed for three hours by a parliamentary committee investigating wrongdoing by the News of the World.

The embattled mogul got some good news when a billionaire Saudi prince who controls the biggest share of News Corp. outside the Murdoch family voiced his support.

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal commended Rupert and James Murdoch for tackling problems at the company and for cooperating with investigators. Alwaleed, who controls 7 percent of News Corp., said the company remains "a valuable and long term investment."

Already 10 people have been arrested, including Coulson, who was editor at News of the World when royal reporter Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire were arrested and jailed in 2007 in connection with the Prince William story.

Police dropped their investigation into the hacking claims in 2007 once the men were prosecuted, and Coulson quit the paper shortly after. It was then that Cameron, who was Conservative opposition leader at the time, hired him as his communications chief.

Police reopened the hacking investigation in January and both police and News Corp. now acknowledge hacking was far more widespread than previously admitted.

The scandal exploded two weeks ago when it emerged that News of the World had intercepted ? and deleted ? the voicemail messages of Milly Dowler, a 13-year-old who was kidnapped in 2002 and later found murdered.

The uproar forced Murdoch to shut the 168-year-old News of the World and abandon a bid to take control of lucrative British Sky Broadcasting, raising questions of whether police accepted bribes to give reporters' tips and highlighting the way politicians sought to curry favor with the News Corp. media empire.

Cameron said Wednesday that a special panel would be set up to investigate practices at other news organizations and the relationship among media organizations, politicians and police.

"The problem has been taking place over many years ? the problem is for both our main parties and the problem is one the public expect us to stop playing with and to rise to the occasion and deal with it for the good of the country," Cameron said.

He adamantly denied, however, that anyone on his staff ever tried to influence the hacking investigation.

Cameron has acknowledged meeting with News Corp. executives more than two dozen times between May 2010 and this month, including several meetings with Rebekah Brooks, a News International executive who has been arrested in the scandal. A friend and neighbor of Cameron's, Brooks attended his birthday party in October.

Cameron told lawmakers he was not involved in the government's decision to approve the BSkyB takeover and "I never had one inappropriate conversation" with Brooks.

Cameron's meetings with News Corp. executives were criticized in Parliament by Labour leader Ed Miliband, who said Cameron had made a "catastrophic error of judgment" in hiring Coulson.

Miliband also reminded Cameron that Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg had warned against bringing Coulson into Downing Street. Clegg sat stone-faced during much of Wednesday's loud and rowdy session.

News Corp. announced Wednesday that it had stopped payments to cover Mulcaire's legal expenses, a day after Murdoch told lawmakers in a special parliamentary committee hearing that he would seek to stop the payments. Mulcaire's lawyer, Sarah Webb, declined to comment on the development.
