Start Self-Improvement Month with Nwenna Kai's Seven Day Detox ...

?

?

September is Self-Improvement Month. Not disssing the original name, but I prefer to call it Self-Empowerment Month. Fall is a time of transition and change, we are starting a new season, the year is almost over and it is a great time to reflect, complete the goals that you had in mind for this year and/or position yourself to start changes and habits for 2012 which is not far away.

To celebrate Self-Empowerment Month, each week will reflect a topic that will help you stay aligned with empowering yourself.

First up, Nwenna Kai?s Detox Your Life in Seven Days.

Seasonal Detoxing is very important our body tends to change with seasons and there are different needs. I am recommending this detox because it is very life friendly and easy. I actually participated in the program. I decided to detox because I wanted to get back to my ?mainly raw? and ?team no meat? eating ways. I lost my healthy way for a few months. ?I felt to get back on track a detox would be perfect. For those of you who do eat meat, this detox can work for you too.

The program is led by food, health and lifestyle expert Nwenna Kai. She was having health issues ?such as migraines, thyroid issues, as well as anxiety issues. Kai wanted to find a way to improve her health. She started to change her diet and she noticed that food can heal. Through the journey of healing, her life changed and along with being an entrepreneur she is a self-published author. Her book The Goddess of Raw Foods is a collection of raw recipes. Her philosophy is ?eating healthy is an act of self-love.?

The Detox starts with daily teleseminar. Each day is dedicated to a principle that will help you with the detoxing process. Topics are not limited to health some topics focus on other areas of your life. The program comes with a suggested menu, recipes and a comprehensive manual that has in depth information regarding the principles that are covered each day. Throughout the week, Kai is available to answer any questions that you have regarding the detox and your health.

I am happy I chose this program,?it was exciting to know that I was getting back on track. I will say that day three was the most difficult because I was breaking out like a teenager but that was my liver being cleansed, according to Kai. As the week progressed, I noticed many changes in my health, thoughts and choices. I am optimistic about my health and the new season.

You can sign up for the Seven Day Detox here. The next session starts September 11, 2011

Please let me know if you participate. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Happy Self-Improvement Empowerment Month

Peace and Blessings,

Yvelette

Food & Drink | Setting up the Charcoal Grill :: By Cherie Rasmussen ...

?Barbecue Tips For Beginners
For most beginners, the talk of grills, smokers, pits, charcoal, and sauces can be more than just a bit daunting. But remember that ?the expert at anything was once a beginner?. So, if you want to make the move from beginner to expert at the barbecue, this summer is the best time to do it. Just take the plunge, and with a few handy tips, you?ll be doing your own fabulous cookout soon enough. One of the first things you will need to get is a grill, and the first decision you will need to make...

?Barbecue Equipment
All of us love a good summer barbecue, but a good many of us are daunted by the thought of organizing all the equipment required for this classic American tradition. While barbecue equipment really encompasses a whole range of tools and pieces of equipment, it is not impossible to find everything you need for a barbecue in your house, or in a store near you. The very first and most indispensable item, of course, is the grill. You can pick either the charcoal or the gas grill. Gas fueled grills...

?Grill Safety Checks
As cookout season approaches, many of us are rapidly pulling out the grills, the aprons, and the mitts in a bid to host that backyard cookout we?ve looked forward to all winter and spring. But while cookouts are about great food and family bonding, a little carelessness can make the whole outdoor experience go completely awry. While you may be focusing on the Fourth of July menu or the custom invites, take some time off to inspect your equipment. Your barbecue grill is your main equipment and...

?Barbecue Styles The Tandoor
Probably the most universal method of cooking, the barbecue is found in regional variations all over the world. In India, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Balkans, Central Asia, Burma, and Bangladesh, it flourishes in the form of the tandoor. In these parts of the world, the tandoor is the accepted form of grilling. The term ?tandoor? is used to describe both the cylindrical clay oven used for cooking and baking and the method of cooking itself. The tandoor is said to have traveled to...

?Best Woods For Barbecue
Let?s say you have decided to have a smoky, fragrant wood-based barbecue this summer for that family reunion. You certainly want to get everything right, from the meats to the marinades to the accompaniments and most definitely to the wood. Especially the wood because smoke is the best way (and indeed the time honored way) to add flavor to food. Different woods leave different flavors to meats, and getting the right wood can definitely add that extra something to your barbecue. People who have...

?The Non Meat Barbecue
Always a challenge, grilling for the vegetarians or vegans among your guests need not be impossible. If you are throwing a barbecue for people who are completely vegetarian, there is no need to panic. There is now an abundance of grilling recipes for vegetarians and if you follow instructions and keep some simple tips in mind, there is no reason to not get it right. First, if you are using pre-made veggie burgers or hot dogs, remember to read and follow instructions. Some pre-made items are...

?Barbecue and Food Safety
From being a summer activity shared by family and friends, the barbecue is now rapidly becoming a year long activity. Cooking in the outdoors has its share of delights; it comes with a set of hazards as well, especially those linked with food contamination. As the barbecues grow in number and frequency, it is become all the more important to follow food safety norms while enjoying the barbecue. When shopping for barbecue supplies, buy cold meat and poultry last, before checkout. Keep these...

?Barbecue Aprons
A great many Americans would probably agree with William Geist when he said, ?I am a man. Men cook outside? That?s the way it is and always has been, since the first settlers of Levittown. That outdoor grilling is a manly pursuit has long been without question. If this wasn?t firmly understood, you?d never get men to put on those aprons with pictures of dancing wienies and things on the front?? So men love to cook outdoors, and because outdoor grilling is the accepted manly occupation, it?s...

?Styles of Barbecue
To the purist, the barbecue is ?the method of cooking tougher meats very, very slowly at low temperatures with the heat source away from the food.? Roughly translated, this amounts to meat cooked at slow temperatures in the indirect heat of wood coals. To the average American, however, a barbecue is anything coked outdoors, mostly on a grill. There is much more to the barbecue than simply taking the grill out on a summer day. In fact, if you want to know more about the American barbecue...

?Memorial Day Cookouts
Traditionally, Memorial Day heralds the start of the outdoor cooking season. It is at this time that people head out to buy wood and charcoal, or mull the best grill to use, look for the best cuts of meats, and dream of the perfect cookout. If you are planning a cookout on Memorial Day and have a largish gathering in mind, it is important to plan in advance so that everything goes well. As they say, the devil is in the details. When planning for a large gathering, make sure that you prepare...

UK Supermarket Sainsbury?s Offers iPad-Ready Shopping Carts

UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is trialling a new shopping cart with a built-in iPad dock and speakers. I’ll let you consider that for a moment. Imagine hordes of marauding shoppers barging through the aisles, staring at their tablets’ screens and pumping out a mixed cacophony of tinny tunes. If you are imagining hell right now, [...]

Greens blast new Alberta oil sands lands policy (Reuters)

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) ? Alberta released an updated land-use plan for its oil sands region on Monday that the energy sector lauded for its balance between development and conservation, but environmentalists criticized for being too industry-friendly.

The latest draft sought to revise a contentious plan for the Lower Athabasca region that the government of the western Canadian province first released in April, aimed at delineating which areas can be developed and which should be set aside.

In that version, some companies faced the possibility of losing portions of oil sands leases to parkland.

"There have been some adjustments made relative to conservation areas and the tenure that's allowed on the landscape, both subsurface tenure and surface tenure," Mel Knight, Alberta's sustainable resource development minister, said.

The document makes note of the economic importance of the oil sands, the third-largest crude source in the world, as well as how a land-use policy will not supersede private property rights or aboriginal treaty rights.

Knight's department developed the policy to deal with the cumulative effects of often-frenzied oil sands development on the environment and local populations, including native communities.

Environmental groups have been highly critical of the pace of oil sands development and its impact on land, water and local communities.

The government said adjustments to boundaries included shifting two townships of land, which each total about 6 square miles (15.5 square km), in an area south of the oil sands hub of Fort McMurray called Birch River, where Sunshine Oilsands Ltd is planning a project.

The adjustments mean less of Sunshine's lease will be affected by the land-use plan.

"I think there has been a great deal of discussion with the companies that hold leases in the area about what the initial boundaries were ... and we encouraged them to talk to the companies to make sure they understand the implications," said David Pryce, vice-president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the industry's main lobby group.

"By and large, though, the plan itself was very much the way they had proposed it previously, and from a broad sense we're still very supportive of the notion of the plan because it gives us the policy certainty we were looking for," Pryce said.

Green groups were not enthusiastic. The updated land-use plan failed to address immediate threats to the region's water supplies and biodiversity, said Jennifer Grant, oil sands program director at the Pembina Institute, an environmental think tank.

"The draft is presented as a weaker document versus a stronger document and that will continue to delay decisions around disturbance limits - limits on any amount of oil sands development that can occur at one time," Grant said.

It has also delayed policies to halt the spread of toxic tailings ponds and tougher restrictions on use of water from the Athabasca River, she said.

"Industry concessions and loopholes are, in part, responsible for weakening the document further," Grant said.

Minister Knight said the land-use plan will be debated by the Conservative government's cabinet in coming weeks. He said he is confident that it will survive an upcoming change in Alberta's leadership. Premier Ed Stelmach is scheduled to step down next month.

PGT: What to look for heading into Deutsche Bank

As we roll on through the PGA Tour playoffs for the FedEx Cup, we here at ProGolfTalk will be looking ahead to the next leg of the playoffs after each tournament in the four-event series. We kick off our FedEx Forward series with a look ahead to the Deutsche Bank Championship after a Hurricane Irene-shortened Barclays.

Dustin Johnson is one of the PGA Tour?s most aggressive players. Combined that with a softened track at Plainfield Country Club and a 54-hole time limit to make as many birdies as possible, and it was a recipe for a Johnson win. His fifth PGA Tour win and second in a 54-hole event shot him up to the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the Deutsche Bank Championship next week at TPC Boston.

His 2-shot win over defending Barclays champion Matt Kuchar afforded him a leap of 18 spots from where he entered the week. It also assures him of a spot in East Lake at the Tour Championship in four weeks. (There?s a one-week break after the second leg.) Kuchar may have come up shy on the Sunday back nine thanks to errant driving, but his runner-up effort has him in second in the FedEx Cup standings.

Regular season stalwarts were not particularly hurt by their efforts at The Barclays. Six of the players ranked in the top-10 remain there for the trip to TPC Boston. Dropouts, though, are significant for Phil Mickelson (T43, Keegan Bradley (MC), Bubba Watson (MC) and David Toms (MC).

Aside from the top two at Plainfield cementing their similar stature in the season-long race, two players in the top-10 at The Barclays made sizable moves to help their playoff positioning.

For the second straight week, Vijay Singh threw up a top-5 finish. His tie for third with Brandt Snedeker at Plainfield jolted him to 8th in the FedEx Cup. That?s a two-week improvement of 34 spots.

Even bigger is the move made by Camilo Villegas. Entering the Wyndham Championship at 125 in the standings, Villegas kept his playoff spot safe going into The Barclays. This week, he showed flashes of the Villegas in 2008 that won the final two playoff events in a September tear. A week shy of the ninth month of the year, a tie for 6th for Villegas catapulted him up 58 spots in the ranking to 51st.

The bubble boy to get into Boston is Ben Crane, who qualifies 100th despite a missed cut. Ernie Els, who has been on the outside looking in the last couple of weeks has found his way to Boston just one spot ahead of Crane.

William McGirt could become the compelling rags-to-riches story of the playoffs, though. McGirt qualified on the bubble for The Barclays but needed one more birdie in his last two holes to ensure his effort at Plainfield would not be in vain. With a 5-footer at the 17th hole on Saturday, he did just that. He comes in at 96th in the ranking, needing next week to improve just the same number of spots to get to the BMW Championship.

The Deutsche Bank Championship ends on Labor Day on Golf Channel on NBC, kicking off on Friday on Golf Channel with first round coverage. TPC Boston should be a little wet, but in great shape for the second leg of the PGA Tour playoffs. The course is a big diversion from the Donald Ross-designed Plainfield, though, so who does it favor?

Not Dustin Johnson. He was T57 there in 2010. Nick Watney, who entered the playoffs in pole position, does not like TPC Boston given his record there. Webb Simpson has missed the cut there in both of his appearances.

As for guys who like this track,?Matt Kuchar has consecutive top-15 finishes in the event. Steve Stricker and Vijay Singh have wins here, as does Phil Mickelson, who stared down Tiger Woods in 2007 to take the second ever playoff event.

Irene hits North Carolina as it moves up East Coast (Reuters)

MOREHEAD CITY, North Carolina (Reuters) ? Hurricane Irene howled ashore in North Carolina on Saturday on a path that triggered evacuations in New York and threatened the densely populated East Coast with flooding and power outages.

New York City ordered unprecedented evacuations and transit shutdowns as states from the Carolinas to Maine declared emergencies due to Irene, whose 520 mile width guaranteed a stormy weekend for tens of millions of people.

With winds of 85 miles per hour (140 km per hour), Irene had weakened to a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale, but forecasters and officials warned that it remained large and dangerous.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg sternly told New Yorkers that Irene was still a life-threatening storm and urged them to heed evacuation orders.

"Staying behind is dangerous, staying behind is foolish and it's against the law," Bloomberg said at a media briefing at Coney Island in Brooklyn.

Some 370,000 city residents are under orders to leave their homes in low-lying areas, many of them in parts of the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens and in downtown Manhattan, he said.

New York's mass transit system, which carries 8.5 million people on weekdays, was to shut down at around midday on Saturday.

The eye of the storm crossed the North Carolina coast near Cape Lookout around 7:30 a.m. EDT, forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Irene was moving north-northeast along the coast and was expected to remain a hurricane as it hit the mid-Atlantic states on Saturday night and New England on Sunday.

On the North Carolina coast, winds howled through the power lines, rain fell in sheets and streets were flooded or littered with signs and tree branches. In the port city of Wilmington, the air was filled with the sound of pine trees cracking.

"You look outside and it's like nature is dancing for us," said Joe Toledo, who left his mobile home with his wife Cindy to take shelter in a hotel in Havelock, North Carolina.

One unidentified man in the Wilmington area was washed away and feared to have drowned, emergency workers said. Another man died of a heart attack while trying to board up his house, North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue said.

Hundreds of thousands of people were without electricity, power and water systems were damaged and there could be "a major hit" to tobacco crops, poultry and livestock, Perdue said.

"We feel very hopeful that we have avoided a huge slap," she told MSNBC television, noting the storm had weakened below what was predicted two days ago. However, Perdue said, "We're going to have millions of dollars of property damage."

MORE THAN A MILLION EVACUATE

More than a million people were ordered to evacuate from Irene's path, many of them cutting short their summer vacations as they fled beach towns and resort islands. Supermarkets and hardware stores were inundated with people stocking up on food, water, flashlights, batteries, generators and other supplies.

"Our number of customers has tripled in the last day or two as people actually said 'Wow, this thing is going to happen,'" said Jack Gurnon, owner of a hardware store in Boston.

Airlines canceled nearly 7,000 flights over the weekend and all three New York area airports were to close to incoming flights at noon on Saturday.

President Barack Obama said the storm could be "extremely dangerous and costly" for a nation that recalls the destruction in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina, which swamped New Orleans, killed up to 1,800 people and caused $80 billion in damage.

Irene was the first hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Ike pounded Texas in 2008.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the military stood ready to help, with more than 100,000 National Guard forces available if needed in eastern states.

In Washington, Irene forced the postponement of a ceremony on Sunday to dedicate a new memorial to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Tens of thousands of people, including Obama, had been expected to attend.

Flooding from Irene killed at least one person in Puerto Rico and two in the Dominican Republic.

Casino attack in Mexico's Monterrey kills 53 (Reuters)

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) ? Masked gunmen killed at least 53 people at a casino in northern Mexico on Thursday, leaving it ablaze with patrons trapped inside in one of the worst attacks in a major Mexican city in years.

Analysts and officials said the brazen assault had all the hallmarks of drug cartels that have plunged Monterrey and other parts of Mexico into a spiral of violence.

A survivor said the armed men burst into the Casino Royale in the prosperous industrial city of Monterrey on Thursday afternoon and threatened gamblers before spraying gasoline on the carpets and setting it on fire.

"My wife came here for a celebration," a weeping man told Milenio TV. "She was having dinner with her friends."

One witness said people stampeded after hearing blasts soon after the attack began. Many patrons ran to hide in the toilets but died from asphyxiation as smoke engulfed the building, a rescue official said.

Rodrigo Medina, governor of Nuevo Leon state, told the Televisa network that 53 people were killed and rescue teams warned the death toll could rise. Media reports said the majority of those killed were women.

Monterrey, 230 km (140 miles) from the Texas border, is a relatively wealthy city of about 4 million people and was for years seen as a model of economic development. But lawlessness has taken its toll as Mexico's drug war has escalated.

President Felipe Calderon called the attack a "barbaric act of terror" and vowed to keep fighting organized crime.

About 42,000 people have been killed in the drug war across Mexico since Calderon took office in late 2006 and deployed troops against the drug cartels.

Alberto Islas, a security expert at consultancy Risk Evaluation, said Thursday's carnage showed Calderon's strategy had failed to curb the power of the cartels.

"The impunity and lack of investigation were the most obvious incentives for the criminals to carry out this act of violence," Islas said. "At the end of the day, they know nothing will be done about it."

CHAOTIC SCENES

Rival drug gangs are fighting for control of Monterrey and routinely extort casinos and other businesses, threatening attacks if the owners refuse to pay.

Televisa said up to 20 more bodies still might be trapped in the debris of the casino. Paramedics and firefighters pulled out bodies covered with plastic bags from a hole in the wall as night fell.

Relatives of people trapped in the casino lined up to demand information while others used social media to start their own searches.

"My sister was working inside as a waitress," said one man. "I know nothing about her. There is only confusion."

National security spokesman Alejandro Poire said the government would do everything in its power to stop the violence and capture those responsible for the casino attack.

Rescuers used an excavator from a nearby construction site to break through a casino wall to search for victims.

Twitter users in Monterrey reported scenes of chaos on the streets around the Casino Royale after the attack and heavy army presence.

Casinos have become popular in Mexico and a number of them have been attacked in recent years. The Milenio newspaper said on Thursday a casino in the state of Coahuila was attacked by a group of armed men.

It will be better to change some business process if possible, rather than customizing. When an organization changes their some business processes, change management expert is required. People resist change. Change management expert will guide how to change, and explain the benefits of changes to the employees. ERP system helps in changing the process; it is designed and developed by adopting best practices of specific industries.ERP Implementation and Change Management

Enterprise resource planning software requires full support from top management at the time of implementation, selection, customization etc. During implementation, organization may require to change some business processes to meet the software standards, which are industry specific standards. Business process can not be change without top management support. It is quite necessary to change some of the business process. It helps in implementation. If you are not willing to change any business process you may go for customization. But, customization is costly and not good for any ERP project. Little bit customization is ok, but too much customization will affect your ERP project. It will increase your project duration, budget, and increase the risk of implementation failure.

ERP Implementation and Change Management

Internal Change Management: An ERP implementation entails changes in business processes and reporting structure. Addressing this paradigm move is a process that the organization has to go through. This will help in achieving the acceptability of the ERP users.

Employees: Employees are the key players in any ERP implementation. The employees of the organization will be in the capacity of process owners, software users and administrators of the ERP software. The main challenge of an ERP implementation is to achieve the acceptability of the system to the employees and for them to perceive the benefits to the organization and to their way of working.

Process: One of the returns on investment (ROI) is adopting business best practices by virtue of an ERP system. Little change in the business process will reduce the chance of implementation failure. Minimum or no customization is very good for any ERP implementation. These processes impact the effectiveness levels to be attained by the organization.

Organization Commitment: ERP system has to be viewed as a process enabler rather than a software package to be installed and run. The implementation process is a journey towards achieving organizational effectiveness. This demands a very strong commitment of the top management throughout the entire process.

French Press Coffee Pot ? The Last Coffee Maker You Ever Will Get

This article has been viewed 11 times.

A French Coffee Press, also called a plunge pot, is seen as a common coffee maker in a lot of European homes, considering they are excellent alternatives to the single or 2 cup automatic drip coffee brewers. However, these coffeemakers are not just a pretty simple technical product, they are a cute kind of art.

The common French Press consists of a straight-sided container, which is made out of borosilicate glass to be long lasting and also heat-resistant and a filter-plunger which pushes through the water when the coffee has steeped and also serves as a lid. At the bottom of the plunger is an item attached that functions as a filter. As this filtration system has got bigger holes than just a filter from the usual drip machines, it is strongly recommended to choose coffee of a coarser grind simply because finer coffee grounds may leak through the filter straight into the coffee.

Making coffee by using a French Pot is an easy approach. Simply fill the desired amount of ground coffee into the glass carafe and put pre-boiled hot water. Stir this content and put the loosened plunger at the top, just below the water line. It will aid retaining the heat. Allow it to steep for a few moments and press the plunger together with the filter all the way down.

According to the amount of portions made, it is recommended to refill the coffee right into an insulated serving pot. You wouldn?t want the coffee to stay in contact with the grinds considering it will keep brewing and definitely will ruin your coffee and also you will need to keep it warm. A French Press Pot is not well insulated and your coffee cools down really quick.

The coffee brewed using a French Press is often stronger in comparison with what you use to be familiar with from the automatic drip machine and also will have the oil from the coffee beans which normally is left behind in devices using a paper filtering. You also need to know that you will see a bit of coffee sediment within your cup of French Press Coffee.

We Will Expose Some Of The Most Popular Weight ... - Health & Fitness

When you try to find out information regarding reducing your weight you will find many things which are just ridiculous. The reason they?re called myths is because lots of people believe them but it isn?t going to change the fact that they are false. As you read through this article you will discover lots of the myths that are just not accurate.

You could eat what ever you desire so long as you exercise. That is a phony statement. Everyone is aware that physical exercise is an important part of weight reduction but you must understand that what you eat is also. All the physical exercise in the world isn?t going to do very much if you keep packing in all the unhealthy foods. You will need to find a happy medium in relation to what you take in and how much exercise you are getting.

If you can eliminate carbs you will discover you will be able to lose the weight faster. Wrong. It doesn?t matter if you take in fats, carbohydrates or even protein. Just what will matter is the total calories that you consume each day. If you eat more calories than you burn up then you?ll gain weight and if you take in less calories than you burn you?ll shed weight. That is all you will need to keep your eye on, not whether you are eating carbohydrates. One thing you should attempt to eat a lot of are fruits and vegetables.. Most junk food contains plenty of calories and you will also find that it doesn?t fill you up.

You have to have a no fat diet. This is just like the above delusion. It does not matter where you get your calories from just as long as your keeping them in balance. Fat is also essential in our diets as it is needed to produce hormones and it can impact our moods greatly. If you do not take in enough fat you will find that you are in a bad mood and you probably won?t have much energy. Make an effort to eat healthful fats, like those found in avocados or perhaps nuts, as opposed to unhealthy ones, found in junk food.

If you quit smoking you will add pounds. This is definitely one more phony fact. While it is true that some people will add pounds, others will not it just depends on the type of person you are and how your will power is. There are people out there who have quit smoking and shed weight. Nicotine may have a very small effect on the metabolic rate however it?s very minimal. If you want to give up smoking, then quit, but don?t let that impact the amount of calories you ingest every day.

If you wish to slim down you will need a wide range of exercise. Not accurate. You don?t have to carry out long, strenuous workouts to burn calories! Taking a swim is definitely a great way to burn calories or you can even burn calories by simply going for a walk. Although you can burn more calories if you workout 3 hours every day, but you don?t have to.

Low fat and fat free food items will make you shed those pounds. This can be a double edged blade. Again you need to keep track of your calories and some fat free food items actually have a lot more calories than other food items. These foods include calories regardless of how you want to look at it and calories is exactly what it is all about. Don?t forget fat free foods possess calories and taking in too much of these foods will cause you to gain weight.

These are just some of the misconceptions you will find when it comes to men and women trying to lose weight. By eating significantly less calories than you burn up everyday is the perfect way to go about losing weight.

Rapper DMX arrested for speeding in Phoenix suburb (AP)

PHOENIX ? The rapper known as DMX has been arrested for speeding in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Carrick Cook told The Associated Press that the 40-year-old rapper was arrested Wednesday night and bonded out of jail Thursday morning. His real name is Earl Simmons.

The highway patrol pulled Simmons on a highway in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa after he was clocked on radar driving at 102 mph.

Simmons was cited for criminal speed, driving on a suspended and revoked license and reckless driving.

He was released from an Arizona state prison last month after his probation was revoked for failing to submit to drug testing and driving on a suspended license.

9 Steps to Better Communication Today - Beyond Blue

Alright, so say you?re not a hugger or a kisser. Say you have germ phobias. I think this article from John Grohol can help: ?9 Steps to Better Communication Today.? To get to the original post, click here.

The most popular myth about communication in relationships is that since you talk to your partner, you?re automatically communicating. While talking to your partner is indeed a form of communication, if it?s primarily about everyday, ?surfacey? topics (?How were the kids?? ?How was work?? ?How?s your mother??), you?re not really communicating about the important stuff. This article is primarily about how to talk in a more open and rewarding manner with your significant other.

Communication either makes or breaks most relationships. You can improve your relationship today, right now, by putting into practice some of these tips for improving the communication in your relationship.

1. Stop and listen.

How many times have you heard someone say this or read this in an article about communication skills? How hard is it to actually do when you?re ?in the moment?? Harder than it sounds. When we?re knee deep within a serious discussion or argument with our significant other, it?s hard to put aside our point for the moment and just listen. We?re often so afraid of not being heard, we rush to keep talking. Ironically, such behavior makes it all the more likely we won?t be heard.

2. Force yourself to hear.

You?ve stopped talking for the moment, but your head is still swirling with all of the things you want to say, so you?re still not really hearing what is being said. Laugh all you want, but therapists have a technique that works very well that ?forces? them to really hear what a client tells them ? rephrasing what a person has just said to them (called ?reflection?).

This may upset a partner if you do it too much, or do it in a tone that suggests you?re mocking rather than trying to seriously listen. So use the technique sparingly, and let your partner know why you?re doing it if they ask ? ?Sometimes I don?t think I?m getting what you?re telling me, and doing this lets me slow my mind down a bit and really try and hear what you?re saying.?

3. Be open and honest with your partner.

Some people have never been very open to others in their life. Heck, some people might not even know themselves, or know much about their own real needs and desires. But to be in a relationship is to take a step toward opening up your life and opening up yourself.

Little lies turn into big lies. Hiding your emotions behind a cloak of invincibility might work for you, but won?t work for most others. Pretending everything is alright isn?t alright. And giving your partner the silent treatment is about as useful as a fish with a bicycle. In the desert. At night. These things may have ?worked? for you in the past, but they are all barriers to good communication.

Being open means talking about things you may have never talked about with another human being before in your life. It means being vulnerable and honest with your partner, completely and unabashedly. It means opening yourself up to possible hurt and disappointment. But it also means opening yourself up to the full potential of all a relationship can be.

4. Pay attention to nonverbal signals.

Most of our communication with one another in any friendship or relationship isn?t what we say, but how we say it. Nonverbal communication is your body language, the tone of your voice, its inflection, eye contact, and how far away you are when you talk to someone else. Learning to communicate better means that you need to learn how to read these signals as well as hear what the other person is saying. Reading your partner?s nonverbal signals takes time and patience, but the more you do it, the more attuned you will be to what they?re really saying, such as:

* Folded arms in front of a person may mean they?re feeling defensive or closed off.

* Lack of eye contact may mean they?re not really interested in what you?re saying, are ashamed of something, or find it difficult to talk about something.

* Louder, more aggressive tone may mean the person is escalating the discussion and is becoming very emotionally involved. It might also suggest they feel like they?re not being heard or understood.

* Someone who?s turned away from you when talking to you may mean disinterest or being closed off.

All the while you?re reading your partner?s nonverbal signals, be aware of your own. Make and maintain eye contact, keep a neutral body stance and tone to your voice, and sit next to the person when you?re talking to them.

5. Stay focused in the here and now.

Sometimes discussions turn into arguments, that can then morph into a discussion about everything and the kitchen sink. To be respectful of one another and the relationship, you should try and keep the discussion (or argument) focused to the topic at hand. While it?s easy to get in the cheap shots or bring up everything that an argument seems to call for, just don?t. If the argument is ostensibly about who?s making dinner tonight, keep it that topic. Don?t veer off down the country road of who does what in the house, who?s responsible for child rearing, and by the way, who cleans the kitchen sink.

Arguments that do veer off tend to escalate and grow larger and larger. One party needs to make an effort at that point to try and de-escalate the argument, even if it means walking away from it, literally. But do so as respectfully as possible, saying something like, ?Look, I can see this isn?t going to get any better by discussing it tonight. Let?s sleep on it and try talking about it with fresh eyes in the morning, okay??

6. Try to minimize emotion when talking about important, big decisions.

Nobody can talk about important, big matters if they feel emotionally vulnerable or charged-up and angry. Those are not the times to talk about the serious issues (like money, getting married, the kids, or retirement). You might think it impossible, nonsensical or even contradictory to talk about an emotional topic like getting married or having children without emotion. And yet, these discussions need to keep a foothold of rationality to them in order to not gloss over the realities that they bring. Marriage, for instance, brings the combining of households and living with another person day-to-day. Having kids isn?t just about cute toddler clothes and painting the nursery, but talking about who?s going to change diapers, feed the newborn, and be available at all hours of the day and night for months on end.

7. Be ready to cede an argument.

How many times do we continue to argue or have a heated discussion because we simply want to be ?right.? I?ve talked about this sense of needing to ?win? arguments more than once. Why? Because so many of couples? arguments revolve around one party thinking they?re ?right? and the other party not willing to cede the point or back off. In fact, though, both parties need to back off.

By doing this, are you giving up a piece of yourself by compromising and not insisting on how right you are? Well, that?s something only you can decide. Would you rather be in a happy relationship where you respect the other person, even if you may occasionally disagree with them? Or would you rather be in an unhappy relationship where you know you?re always right, no matter what? It just comes down to your priorities ? if being ?right? is more important to you than your partner?s happiness, then perhaps you have not found the right partner.

8. Humor and playfulness usually help.

You don?t have to be funny in order to use humor and playfulness in everyday conversations. You just need to use the sense of humor you do have and try and inject it into more of your communications with your partner. Humor helps lighten everyday frustrations and helps puts things into perspective more gently than other methods. Playfulness reminds us that even as adults, we all have a side to us that enjoys fun and taking a break from the seriousness of work and other demands made on us.

9. Communicating is more than just talking.

To communicate better and more effectively in your relationship, you don?t only have to talk. You can communicate in other ways ? through your actions, and nowadays, electronically too (through email, Facebook, blogs, texting or Twitter). All too often, couples focus only on the talking aspect of their relationship, but your actions also speak loudly. Keeping in touch throughout the day or week through email or other electronic means also reminds the person you?re thinking about them and how important they are in your life. Even if such communications are mainly playful or inconsequential, they can help lighten your partner?s day and improve their mood.

Some couples also find that using email or another method is easier to discuss emotional issues rather than trying to do so face-to-face. It?s something to consider if every time you try and bring up a particular topic with your significant other, it turns into an argument or they shy away from it. Email or texting may be a way of communicating about such matters more openly and directly.

Quake calls to mind terrorism as 9/11 approaches (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Shaking ground and swaying buildings sent panicked people rushing for exits, pouring into streets or diving under desks. For some in Washington and New York and elsewhere along the East Coast, their first thoughts turned to terrorism ? not nature.

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., was walking up Capitol Hill on his way to preside over a pro-forma session of the Senate when Tuesday's earthquake hit. Feeling the ground sway, he sat down on a bench.

"My concern was that it was something other than an earthquake," Coons said. He ended up presiding over a 22-second technical session in a conference room of a building near the Capitol.

A quake was not the first thought either for Lisa Goeas, who works in a building a few blocks from the White House and near a city subway station.

"Our building is right across the street from the Metro, so we thought a bomb went off," said a shaken Goeas, who fled her office with her colleagues.

At the majestic Washington National Cathedral, at least three of the four pinnacles on the central tower fell off, a spokesman said. The pinnacles are the top stones on the cathedral's towers. Cracks appeared in the flying buttresses at the cathedral's east end, the oldest part of the structure.

The earthquake centered in Virginia ? the most powerful quake to strike the East Coast in 67 years ? was felt as far south as South Carolina and north to Massachusetts, where a vacationing President Barack Obama was about to tee off in a round of golf on Martha's Vineyard. Reporters said they felt the temblor, but it didn't keep Obama from continuing play.

As the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 approaches, recollections of the terrorist attacks of 2001 crossed many minds.

In New York, workers in the Empire State Building spilled into the streets, some having descended dozens of flights of stairs.

"I felt dizzy, man," said Adrian Ollivierre, a 28-year-old accountant who was in his office on the 60th floor. "I thought I was having maybe a heart attack, and I saw everybody running. I think what it is, is the paranoia that happens from 9/11, and that's why I'm still out here ? because, I'm sorry, I'm not playing with my life."

His colleague, Caitlin Trupiano, said no one in the accounting office knew at first that it was a quake.

"I ran down all 60 flights. I wasn't waiting for the elevator," she said. "We were just counting the floors as we came down."

Outside another exit, on 34th Street, waiting with colleagues from a 52nd floor office, software developer Nathan Chaffee described how the tremor felt. "I was sitting at my desk and all of a sudden my chair is going like this," he said, bending his knees in a repeated bucking motion. "And I thought, `Am I falling?'"

His colleague Marty Wiesner rushed to the window to look out and around. "I thought we'd been hit by an airplane," he said.

In Washington, the U.S. Park Service evacuated and closed all monuments and memorials along the National Mall. At Reagan National Airport, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking. Officials reported some minor damage at the Supreme Court, including fallen plaster and small shards of marble near elevators.

The Pentagon, the White House, the Capitol and federal agencies in and around Washington were evacuated in whole or in part. Many sent nonemergency workers home for the day as officials checked buildings for damage. The Capitol was reopened by late afternoon for people to retrieve personal items and to secure offices as structural engineers checked other buildings in the complex.

"As of now," Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said, "tomorrow is expected to be a regular workday."

At the Pentagon, where a hijacked jetliner crashed on Sept. 11, the shaking sent people streaming into corridors. Light fixtures suspended from the ceiling swayed back and forth in some areas as people were urged to evacuate the building. The main damage reported in the government's biggest workspace came from a broken water pipe, which led officials to shut down two corridors.

And while the damage appeared to be limited, roads and highways in and around Washington were clogged in the hours after the quake.

Marion Babcock, a mother of four children from Washington, D.C., spent two hours driving home from a bookstore in Alexandria, Va. ? normally a 25-minute drive. "It was horrendous," she said of the post-quake traffic.

She was at the bookstore with her children when the temblor struck and sent lights, ceiling tiles and books falling and her children running. The kids, she said, were frazzled and frightened until they all made it safely home.

"I treated their post-traumatic stress with copious amounts of chocolate mint and cookie dough ice cream," said Babcock.

Within a stone's throw of the quake epicenter in Mineral, Va., Zach Whittington had been chatting away on the phone in bed when the house he was in began to rumble.

"It felt like a big giant took it and shook it like a snow globe," said Whittington, 21, who does landscaping work. "You would have never thought that earthquakes happen out here."

He spent the afternoon cleaning up the broken pictures and the shattered plates that tumbled during the quake, including nine dessert dishes with their own sayings. "Life is fragile," read one. "Handle with care."
