i am like many others not happy that apps available for free on android are being charged on our windows phones like nfs hot purzuit

Apps available like nfs hot pursuit and flash videos should be made available free. People using android are getting it for free and still people who trust and buy windows phones are being made to pay again after paying for their phones. Personally it would be bad for business for Microsoft as it is trying to fight android . Asking money for such useful games and apps personally feels like cheating. I hope something is done in this regard soon

Christie Serino Scholarship Foundation golf tournament later this month

? ? The inaugural Christie Serino Scholarship Fund Golf Outing is raplidly approaching. ?The date for the event is Monday August 26, 2013 at Turner Hill Country Club in Ipswich. For further information, check out www.turnerhill.com??

? ? The Christie Serino Scholarship Fund was established on January 4, 2013 in the memory of Christie Serino. Serino was a longtime resident of Saugus and, at the time of his passing from his courageous second battle with cancer,? was the AD and head hockey coach at Malden Catholic High School.

? ? Below are comments taken from the release

? ? Serino?had been a mentor, coach and friend to so many young men over the past 40 years. His finger prints are still seen today all over the North Shore in both the hockey and baseball worlds.? There was no one better at helping a kid become the best he could be as a true student athlete. No matter what level the young man was, Serino was always there for them.? He exemplified what a coach/teacher should be and his efforts can be seen directly thru the many young men he helped mold.

? ??To assist in the carrying on the legacy and vision, we have established a scholarship fund in his memory to assist students from the Saugus and Malden Catholic communities.? Scholarships will be awarded annually to students from both communities who are both seniors in high school as well as current college students.???

Pregnancy in horses: Helping horses come to term

[unable to retrieve full-text content]It is not only humans that sometimes experience difficulty having children. Horses too have a low birth rate, with many pregnancies failing within the first few weeks after conception. The reason is currently unknown but recent research suggests that a particular class of blood cells may be involved.

Smart Technology May Help Kids With Autism Learn ... - Health.com

By Alan Mozes
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, Aug. 2 (HealthDay News) ? Already embraced by millions for their portability and ease-of-use, new Canadian research suggests that smart technologies such as the iPad and iPod may also serve as therapeutic tools for a very specific group: children with autism.

Rhonda McEwen, an assistant professor with the Institute of Communication Culture and Information Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga in Ontario, and her team found that such devices can go a considerable distance in terms of helping these kids significantly improve their ability to express themselves and engage with others.

?I was surprised by some of the findings, and so were the teachers who participated in the research,? McEwen said. ?Using the touch devices, the study participants demonstrated knowledge gathered throughout their education that could not be elicited via traditional assessment means that rely on verbal communication. We can surmise that the receptive communication skills are more advanced than first thought,? she said.

?Further, the role that the devices play in brokering peer-to-peer social interaction was unanticipated,? McEwen added. ?Finally, the progress in expressive communication among study participants exceeded expectations.?

McEwen and her team were scheduled to discuss their findings Friday at the American Psychological Association annual convention in Honolulu.

Autism experts hailed the effort to unlock this technology?s potential.

?We have heard from many parents about how much their children enjoy mobile devices like the iPad, and how it is helping with learning and communication,? noted Andy Shih, senior vice president of scientific affairs at Autism Speaks in New York City. ?[So] we need more research in this rapidly developing field to understand how to maximize the benefits these devices can deliver to individuals and families living with autism.?

McEwen and her colleagues set out to assess how off-the-shelf consumer technology might be harnessed to boost communication and social skills among children with autism.

In 2010, the Canadian team launched a case study in a downtown Toronto public elementary school.

Investigators initially studied 12 children in six specific classrooms, all of whom had been diagnosed as having autism spectrum disorder and most of whom were classified as ?nonverbal.?

Two hand-held touch technology devices currently sold by the computer manufacturer Apple were introduced into the classroom setting: the phone-sized iPod Touch and the tablet-sized iPad.

Costing roughly between $200 to $600 a piece, the mobile devices incorporate brightly illuminated screens that display a multitude of applications that range in price from free to less than $10 each. In turn, users can manipulate and respond to visual and audio content by means of simple finger gestures, such as touching or swiping.

Over a six-month trial, the students became accustomed to using the two devices.

The result: nine of the students showed a statistical improvement ranging from mild to significant in their overall communication skills. For example, when one boy took a visual identification quiz on an iPad, his teacher realized the child knew far more than the teacher had thought.

This meant that using the devices helped to boost motivation among 75 percent of the children, while also increasing their attention span and ability to interact socially. The researchers now have detailed data on 36 students.

But why and how?

According to Brenda Smith Myles, an autism consultant for the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence in Columbus, Ohio, this kind of readily accessible technology works by ?evening the playing field for individuals with autism.?

?Many are nonverbal or low-verbal, and even those who are highly verbal often have a big degree of anxiety when interacting with someone,? she noted. ?They tend to like structure and predictability, and are largely visual learners. And these platforms and these apps address all three of those issues in a very nonstigmatizing and motivating way. They allow our folks to reach out in a way that is comfortable, so they can really communicate what they know,? Myles explained.

?Of course, in addition, the technology is also cool, and automatically draws interest from other peers,? said Myles, who was formally chief of programs for the Autism Society of America. ?But certainly not all apps will work for all children, or will work in the same way. You do have to match the app to the learner, and each learner will be different. But generally speaking, these devices enhance skills and interest in communication. And they?re easy to learn, easy to use and, best of all, low-cost.?

The importance of the latter point is not lost on Dr. Jeffrey Brosco, associate director of the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

?Practically speaking, the older tech was extraordinarily expensive and cumbersome,? he noted. ?So this is a real advance, because you?re not comparing the cost of an iPad and apps with books and other low-tech tools. You?re really comparing these new devices with the old world of technology, in which machines that produce language cost thousands of dollars.?

But what should parents make of this finding?

?Certainly, many families worry that if they rely too much on a communication device it will interfere with their autistic child?s ability to talk,? acknowledged Brosco. ?But we find that it?s actually a bridge to talking, because it gives these children a different mode with which to communicate. It helps them use language in a functional capacity, by giving them a way to get there faster and more efficiently. So, in general, I?d say this is a wonderful boon to families of autistic children.?

The data and conclusions of research presented at meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Google unveils Android Device Manager, its own version of Find My iPhone

Android Device Manager (teaser 001)

Google has just filled another missing link in its Android software by introducing a feature which allows users to find their misplaced or stolen device on a world map, wipe its contents remotely, send alerts and more. If the announcement sounds a lot like Apple?s Find My iPhone app, you?re right, it does ? though you?d be hard-pressed to argue against giving Android users the ability to track down their precious gear.

Called Android Device Manager, in true Google fashion it?s a web-based tool that works much like the Find My iPhone iOS app + iCloud web interface combo from Apple?

According to a post over at the official Android blog,?the new Android Device Manager will become available later this month for?gadgets running Android 2.2 and above.

Another post explains the feature can locate, ring and wipe a misplaced device.

Have you ever lost your phone in between the couch cushions or left it in a restaurant?

Later this month, you will be able to use a new service called Android Device Manager, which can quickly ring your phone at maximum volume so you can find it (even if it?s been silenced), or locate it on a map, in real time, using Android Device Manager.

Users will need to be signed into their Google Account to use Android Device Manager.

In addition to the web interface, there will also be a downloadable Android app to ?allow you to easily find and manage your devices?.

Back in April, major U.S. carriers banded together and?joined forces with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to create a joint database that would keep track of stolen handsets and those reported as lost.

Because of its visibility, Apple often receives (un)joust criticism for supposedly not doing enough to prevent device thefts, this in spite of being the first major manufacturer to introduce a comprehensive anti-theft service in the form of Find My iPhone.

Microsoft?s Windows Phone has a similar feature, too.

Activation Lock (iPhone screenshot 001)

Lately, the government?s been increasingly calling out Apple, Google and other gadget makers, demanding they?implement advanced theft-deterrent measures. The iPhone maker has responded with a new iOS 7 feature called Activation Lock.

Activation Lock renders stolen devices useless by preventing activation?on a wireless carrier, even after a thief has disabled the Find My iPhone feature or wiped the phone.

Early impressions appear to be encouraging, with?San Francisco?s District Attorney calling Activation Lock a ?clear improvement.??Prosecutors, however, remain?cautiously optimistic?about?Activation Lock in iOS 7 being able to curb urban iPhone theft.

For example, San Francisco?s district attorney has called upon security experts?from the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center to try and bypass the latest security measures implemented on both Apple?s iPhone 5 and Samsung?s Galaxy S4.

Stocks Extend Gains In Late Trade; Ocwen At New ... - Investors.com

The major averages built on earlier gains in late-afternoon trading Thursday as investors cheered better-than-expected jobs and manufacturing data.

The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 were each up 1.2%, with the S&P rising above 1700 for the first time ever. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.9%. Volume was running 13% higher on the NYSE and was up 1% on the Nasdaq compared with the same time Wednesday.

The stock market today jumped at the open after initial jobless claims unexpectedly fell last week and the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index rose much more than expected in July.

Ocwen Financial (OCN) jumped 7% to a new high after its quarterly earnings report. Volume was heavy as the stock continued to rise above its 10-week line, putting it 20% past a 42.17 buy point.

Ocwen's Q2 profit rose 66% to 53 cents a share, a healthy gain that nevertheless trailed analysts' expectations. But revenue soared 151%, easily beating views, and the company said it may buy back shares.

Software developer Tangoe (TNGO) rose 5% in above-average turnover. It's risen beyond a buying range after breaking out from a base within larger correction. But it's still 13% off its high.

Meanwhile, Facebook (FB) rebounded from Wednesday's 2% loss by climbing 3% to a new high in almost double its average daily volume. The stock was aiming to close above its IPO price of 38 for the first time since debuting in May 2012.

On the downside, Hertz Global (HTZ) slumped 3.5%, dropping back below its 50-day line, in volume that was running more than three times its daily average. And camera-chip designer Ambarella (AMBA) gave up 4% in heavy turnover. It's lost support at its 10-week line for the first time since March.

Smartphone cradle, app detect toxins, bacteria

URBANA, Ill. (AP) ? Afraid there may be peanuts or other allergens hiding in that cookie? Thanks to a cradle and app that turn your smartphone into a handheld biosensor, you may soon be able to run on-the-spot tests for food safety, environmental toxins, medical diagnostics and more.

The handheld biosensor was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A series of lenses and filters in the cradle mirror those found in larger, more expensive laboratory devices. Together, the cradle and app transform a smartphone into a tool that can detect toxins and bacteria, spot water contamination and identify allergens in food.

Kenny Long, a graduate researcher at the university, says the team was able to make the smartphone even smarter with modifications to the cellphone camera.

HTC One mini passes through the FCC with AT&T-capable LTE

HTC One Mini reaches the FCC with AT&Tcapable LTE

There have been rumors of the HTC One mini coming to AT&T, including a reported press shot from Android Police, but we've seen little in the way of hard evidence. Thankfully, the FCC just gave us Exhibit A: the One Mini has once again shown up at the US agency, this time with support for AT&T-friendly HSPA+ and LTE frequencies. Although there are few surprises in store, the new variant doesn't offer HSPA+ for T-Mobile; HTC isn't likely to repeat the multi-carrier strategy that brought the full-size One to the US. That may disappoint customers on other networks, although if it's any comfort, the FCC appearance hints that the device could reach Americans relatively soon.

Former Chief and President of Remington Fire Department Indicted Separately for Fraud, Embezzlement

??Former Chief and President of Remington Fire Department Indicted Separately for Fraud, Embezzlement

ALEXANDRIA, VA?Douglas G ?Bo? Taylor, age 52, of Remington, Virginia, the former chief of the Remington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (RVFD), was charged in an eight-count indictment by a federal grand jury on allegations related to theft from a program receiving federal funds, wire fraud, and filing false individual income tax returns, according to charges unsealed today. In a separate indictment, William Joseph Stuart, age 52, of Bealton, Virginia, the former president of the RVFD, was also charged with theft from a program receiving federal funds, according to a one-count indictment made public yesterday. Neil H MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Valerie Parlave, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI?s Washington Field Office; and Thomas J Kelly, Special Agent in Charge, Washington, DC. Field Office, IRS-Criminal Investigation, made the announcement today after the indictment of Taylor was unsealed.

Taylor is scheduled to make his initial appearance later this afternoon in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Stuart is expected to appear in the same Court on Friday, August 2, 2013, for his arraignment. Taylor faces a maximum penalty on the two theft charges of 10 years in prison and 20 years in prison for each of the four wire fraud charges. These charges carry a maximum fine of $250,000 and full restitution.

Finally, for each of the two charges alleging the filing of false income tax returns, Taylor faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison, a $100,000 fine, and full restitution. Stuart faces a maximum penalty on the single theft count of 10 years in prison, $250,000 fine, and full restitution. According to the indictment, Taylor served as the chief of the RVFD from 1994 through 2011, during a time when the RVFD fire station underwent major renovations and reconstruction with funding, in significant part, from the United States Department of Agriculture. The indictment alleges that Taylor, a licensed master electrician, offered to do some of the renovations at the fire station and only seek reimbursement for his out-of-pocket expenses.

As the charges allege, Taylor then submitted false invoices that contained charges for materials Taylor did not purchase and charges for labor that, at times, was never performed or were inflated from the hours that were actually performed. Taylor is also accused of using a Prince William County Public Schools System (PWCS) credit card to purchase some of the materials used at the fire station project (and elsewhere). In total, the indictment alleges that Taylor defrauded the RVFD of more than $90,000 and the PWCS of approximately $60,000. Finally, Taylor is accused of not disclosing the money he fraudulently obtained from the RVFD and winnings from the Virginia lottery on two individual income tax returns filed with the IRS.

A separate indictment alleges that during 2008 and 2009, Stuart embezzled approximately $40,000 from the RVFD financial accounts where he had signature authority. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation?s Washington Field Office and the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Mark D Lytle is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States. Any person who believes they may have information regarding public corruption in the Northern Virginia area is encouraged to call the FBI?s Northern Virginia Public Corruption Hotline at 703-686-6225.

Nothing to 'chuckle' about: Despite what Obama says, Keystone jobs no laughing matter [Video]

Report an error

n an interview with the New York Times on Saturday, U.S. President Barack Obama ?chuckled? ? that?s what the Times called his reaction ? when he was asked about the number of jobs that would be created by the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

?Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator. There is no evidence that that?s true,? said Obama. ?The most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline ? which might take a year or two ? and then after that we?re talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 (chuckles) jobs in a economy of 150 million working people.? The Times actually added the word ?chuckles? to their report.

But it?s hard to find the humour. Five years after the Great Recession began, the U.S. unemployment rate has not returned to pre-recession levels. Worse, millions of Americans have dropped out of the workforce, giving up looking for jobs at all. The real youth unemployment rate ? including those who have stopped looking for a job ? is a staggering 23%.

Those young Americans might want one of those 2,000 construction jobs. TransCanada says it will be 20,000 construction jobs ? which sounds plausible, given that it?s a $7.6 billion dollar infrastructure project.

Obama?s own State Department conducted an exhaustive study on the pipeline ? several studies, actually, comprising more than 12,000 pages ? and they estimate building the pipe would create 42,000 jobs.

It?s surely true that the pipeline?s construction jobs would end once it?s constructed. That?s the nature of construction. Carpenters don?t stick around after a family has moved in to a house, either. But for 42,000 construction workers, the Keystone XL is the ?next? job they?ve been waiting for since it was first proposed by TransCanada back in 2008. They?re still waiting. Those who haven?t given up yet.

The U.S. government has been reviewing the project for close to five years. Which is longer than it took the U.S. to win the Second World War, after Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Perhaps Obama is unfamiliar or uncomfortable with jobs that are created by the private sector, jobs for which he cannot take political credit, jobs in red states, in the Republican heartland. His own life?s work, and his wife?s too, has been a series of public sector jobs from ?community organizer? to professor to politician. His own $26-billion green jobs plan ? including half a billion to the now-bankrupt solar panel company, Solyndra ? created less than 2,300 permanent jobs, or about $11 million a pop. And then there was his failed bailout of Detroit.

It isn?t the president?s job to approve or disapprove of pipelines; it?s not in the U.S. Constitution. The only reason Obama has any say in this pipeline is because it crosses the Canada-U.S. border.

There are more than 80 pipelines that cross the border. But this president is the first to make an international incident out of regular commerce ? and to hold thousands of U.S. jobs hostage

to wealthy environmental activists.

The Keystone XL pipeline will be approved one day. Perhaps politically bundled with a proposed new carbon tax; perhaps after the 2014 mid-term elections, once Obama wrings tens of millions more out of his eco-donors; perhaps in the final days of his administration in 2016. But every day that goes by, thousands of American workers sit on their hands. And OPEC princes laugh and laugh.

Need some(?) help with soviet union - 1936

hey guys,
im able do defeat china as japan in about 1,5 years and get rid of the allies in the pacific without any trouble.
BUT
i cant defeat germany as soviet russia in the 1936 szenario-.-

what do i do wrong?

i tried a few different things:
-the "german style": change doctrine to spearhead and get quite a few tank with a good mix of tank and mot. inf.
-the "russian style": get a massive infantry army (even used up all my manpower till the war begins)
-the "flying style": get a bunch of planes and bombard almost everything, mix with a good groundarmee (ofc)
-the "wait for failure style": get about 5 billion tank and wait till germany makes a move and is open for counter attacks

of course i build up a good economy right at the beginning and the war starts with an IC of roughly 350-400, depending on my "style"

maybe im playing not "as russian as i could", maybe i just got a bad idea in my head that messes everything up but in the end:
im out of ideas.

can anyone help out, just a little? what could be my mistake? how long do you guys build up IC and how much do you invest (at once)? what do you do about all the dissent? get rid of it as fast as possible or better slowly so you can build up some IC in that time?

point everything out that might help me,how cruel it might sound, i can take it

House GOP leaders look at splitting farm bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A month after suffering an embarrassing defeat, House Republican leaders are considering a new strategy to try to win support for the massive, five-year farm bill: splitting it into two separate measures, one for farm programs and one for food stamps.

It's an attempt to gather support from conservatives who voted against the $100 billion-a-year farm bill, and critics say it could lead to bigger cuts in both farm subsidies and the domestic food aid.

Republicans discussed the strategy in a Tuesday caucus meeting, with House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., saying for the first time that he would go along with a split bill if leaders could deliver the votes. Republicans were assessing support for the idea, and a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said no decisions had been made on how to revive the bill.

The House rejected the farm bill in June by a vote of 234-195 after some in the GOP complained that the legislation did not cut enough from food stamps. Democrats said the 3 percent cut in food stamps was too much.

The idea is that the farm portion of the bill could pass without the food stamp provisions. By splitting the two, Republicans might be able to make bigger cuts in food stamp programs and pass that bill with conservative support.

However, conservative groups, farm groups and nutrition groups all expressed concerns with the strategy.

Farm groups and anti-hunger groups have warned that separating the farm and nutrition programs after decades of linking them would be a major mistake. Rural lawmakers have added money for food stamps to the farm bill, which sets policy for agricultural subsidies and other farm programs, to gather urban votes for the measure.

The Democratic-led Senate, which overwhelmingly passed a farm bill with smaller cuts to food stamps, would be reluctant to go along with a split bill or further cuts to the programs.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said that she believes splitting the bill would be a "major mistake."

Spending on food stamps has doubled in the last five years to almost $80 billion a year and the number of members in both parties who make agriculture a priority has dwindled. Still, separating the two bills could create bigger problems as members may not have an incentive to vote for either piece of legislation.

In a letter to Boehner last week, more than 500 farm groups discouraged GOP leadership from splitting the legislation.

"We believe that splitting the nutrition title from the rest of the bill could result in neither farm nor nutrition programs passing, and urge you to move a unified farm bill forward," the groups wrote.

Compounding the difficulties would be any changes to the farm legislation to gather more conservative votes. The farm bill passed by the House Agriculture Committee and rejected by the full House would have cut farm subsidies by about $2 billion a year, but some Republicans have wanted deeper cuts.

As the GOP counted votes for the split bill strategy, conservative groups proposed further cuts to farm subsidies. They expressed concern that House leaders were just trying to push the bill through so they could begin negotiations with the Senate.

"The end result of such a conference would be a perpetuation of subsidies and government intervention that will continue to harm consumers and taxpayers alike," said Michael A. Needham, CEO of the conservative advocacy group Heritage Action.

At the same time, Agriculture Committee members from both parties who helped craft the delicate balance of the bill don't want to see further reductions.

Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson, the top Democrat on the Agriculture Committee, said that splitting the bill is "stupid" and he doesn't believe any Democrats would vote for it.

"Even if they got this through the House, I don't see how you are successful in getting a bill out of conference and signed by the president, because you have alienated so many people in the process," he said.

More difficult than passing a farm-only bill would be passing a food stamp bill, as Republicans have disagreed on how much should be cut. The House Agriculture Committee bill cuts about $2 billion a year from the almost $80 billion-a-year program, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. But some on the right would like to see much bigger cuts and to change the structure of the program.

Billy Shore, the founder and CEO of the anti-hunger group Share Our Strength, says the split would make SNAP vulnerable when many families and children are dependent on it. Around one in seven people used food stamps last year.

"The concern is that (splitting the bill) would make it easier for the Republican leadership to find support for those cuts," Shore said. "For a program that has worked so well for decades it feels a little short-sighted."

Farm groups agreed.

Jon Doggett, a lobbyist for the National Corn Growers Association, said that farm groups will continue to need allies as rural areas decrease in population and fewer members of Congress are elected on farm issues. In addition to nutrition advocates, the bill also brings together agriculture and environmental groups who favor conservation measures in the bill that protect environmentally-sensitive farmland.

An Imprisoned Hacker Invented an ATM Attachment That Stops Skimmers

Valentin Boanta has a lot of free time on his hands?five years worth, to be exact. That's because Boanta is currently serving a prison sentence for, according to Reuters, "supplying gadgets to an organized crime gang used to conceal ATM skimmers." So with all that time to think about what he's done, the apparently penitent prisoner spent six months developing an ATM add-on to prevent the exact crime that put him there in the first place.

Presented at the 28th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension

San Francisco, Calif. May 15, 2013 Considered the "silent killer," high blood pressure affects approximately one billion people worldwide, including one in three adults in the United States. From May 15 18, 2013, members of the medical community from across the globe gather at the 28th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) in San Francisco to discuss the epidemic. During the conference, more than 200 new studies about hypertension will be shared, with the goal of increasing the understanding of hypertension and one day curing it altogether.

Among the findings from the ASH meeting is research that suggests mobile phone calls may cause a rise in blood pressure; yoga may lower it; and despite the need to cut back on sodium to lower blood pressure, hypertensive individuals may have an increased desire for saltier foods.

William B. White, MD, ASH President and 2013 Scientific Program Committee Chair adds, "The ASH meeting brings together the country's top scientists in clinical hypertension to give numerous state-of-the-art lectures on a wide variety of topics in hypertension and related clinical concerns."

Mobile Phone Calls Acutely Increase Blood Pressure

As of December 2012, 87% of American adults had a mobile phone1. According to a recent study from doctors G. Crippa; D. Zabzuni; A. Cassi; and E. Bravi of Guglielmo da Saliceto Hospital, talking on those mobile phones causes a significant rise in blood pressure. During a phone call, blood pressure readings jumped significantly from 121/77 to 129/82.

Systolic blood pressure rise was less drastic in patients who were used to participating in more than 30 phone calls per day. While the reason behind this is not known, Dr. Crippa speculates two possible reasons: "The subset of patients who were more accustomed to phone use were younger, which could show that younger people are less prone to be disturbed by telephone intrusions. Another possibility is that people who make more than 30 calls per day may feel more reassured if the mobile phone is activated since they are not running the risk of missing an opportunity."

Saying Om: Yoga Can Lower Blood Pressure

Yoga calms the mind and works out the body, but now, a study on the effects of yoga on hypertension concluded that yoga can significantly lower blood pressure. The 24-week study, conducted by Debbie L. Cohen, MD; Anne Bowler, BA and Raymond R. Townsend, MD of the University of Pennsylvania, showed that people who practiced yoga 2 3 times per week saw their blood pressure decrease significantly: an average of three points for both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, from 133/80 to 130/77. Participants who only followed a controlled dietand did not practice yogasaw only a decrease of one point, from 134/83 to 132/82.

Higher Salt Preference in Hypertensive People, but Using Other Seasonings Can Curb Desire

A new study shows that hypertensive individuals actually prefer more salt in their food than do normotensive individuals. The study of 44 adults aged 73.5 +/- 7.0 years was conducted by a team at Sao Paolo University in Brazil.

Initially, participants were given three pieces of bread with varying amounts of salt on each. In this tasting, 68% of hypertensive and 31% of normotensive patients (those with normal blood pressure levels) preferred the bread with the highest concentration of salt. Fifteen days later, the patients underwent an identical taste testthe only difference being that other seasonings had been added to the salted bread. In that case, only 14% of hypertensive and 0% of normotensive patients preferred the bread with the highest salt content. Not only did this show that hypertensive patients prefer a higher salt content, but that, across the board, use of other seasonings diminished the preference for salt.

Healthier Medical Practitioners Strive for Healthier Patients

Healthy lifestyle behaviors are associated with a reduced risk of hypertension in adultsbut a new study conducted by J. Fang, C. Ayala and F. Loustalot of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that a primary care physician's (PCP) healthy lifestyle behaviors may be linked to his or her recommendations for hypertension prevention. The study looked at what percentage of physicians recommended one of six key healthy lifestyle recommendations for hypertension prevention: consume a healthy diet (89.4%); reduced salt intake (89.9%); attain or maintain a healthy weight (90.3%); limit alcohol intake (69.4%); be physically active (95.1%); and stop smoking (90.4%).

Fifty-six percent of practitioners recommended all six healthy habits. Of note, the probability of recommending all six lifestyle behaviors increased when PCPs engaged in regular physical activity or consumed the recommended amount of produce (five or more cups per day) for four or more days each weekshowing that a PCP's own behavior was associated with clinical recommendations to prevent hypertension for their adult patients.

A Chat With Daniel Guermeur, Founder Of Das Keyboard

4d9badc7c3de0a7f0235b5.L._V388056413_SX200_I've been enamored with the Das Keyboard since it launched in 2005. These supremely clicky, IBM-style keyboards are some of the most rugged mechanical input devices you can buy. Their Pro model -- an all-black monolith with black keys and no key markings -- is the gold standard for Gibson-esque console jockeys who believe that the best keyboard can be used as a weapon and shouldn't be touched by mere mortals. The company just launched a new "quiet" version of its Das Keyboard, Model S Professional Quiet, and I thought it would be fun to talk with Daniel Guermeur, founder of the company who went from being an open-source software maven at the turn of the century to making one of the most sought-after and coolest keyboards on the market. While Guermeur still works in software, his clicky Das Keyboard is probably his most lasting legacy in the gaming and programming world, a unique tool suited to unique professionals.

Nokia unveils new metal-body Lumia smartphone

LONDON/HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia unveiled a lighter, metal model in its Lumia smartphone range, as it tries to catch the eye of buyers to close the huge market lead of rivals Samsung and Apple Inc in the lucrative handset market.

The Lumia 925, to be sold for 469 euros ($610) before taxes and subsidies through carriers such as Vodafone and China Mobile, is the latest in Nokia's range using Windows Phone software, on which Chief executive Stephen Elop has pinned the future of the loss-making company to reverse a dramatic drop in revenue over the last two years.

The phone weighs 139 grams, compared with 185 grams for the earlier 920 model, which some critics had said was too heavy.

The new phone will be rolled out globally starting in June, and is due to be sold in the United States by T-Mobile and in China by China Mobile and China Unicom, it said.

On Friday, Nokia unveiled the Lumia 928 for the U.S. market, priced at $99 after a rebate and a two-year deal with Verizon Wireless.

Recon Instruments reveals Recon Jet, a sports HUD that's so bright it need shades

We know Glass comes with some snap-on shades, which is no doubt great when casually vlogging in the sun. If you're heading down a mountain, though, you're going to need something a little more like Recon Jet. You may know Recon Instruments from its line of technolicious HUD ski goggles, but Jet sees the firm leap into more casual (yet no less useful) eyewear. Inside you'll find a dual-core processor, WiFi, GPS, Ant+, Bluetooth and an HD camera, plus all the sensors you could want (altimeter, thermometer, accelerometer etc). Recon Jet comes with its own open platform (which typically has been based on Android), and will have some existing native apps (video streaming, Facebook integration, etc.) on display at Google I/O this week. Comparison with Mountain View's own product will be inevitable, but we're guessing that Recon hopes you'll leave Glass on your desk, while popping Jet on for the weekend.
