Cameron says 'devastated' by friend's death at Glastonbury (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha were "devastated" to hear of the death of his local constituency chairman at the Glastonbury festival earlier on Sunday.

The body of Christopher Shale, chairman of West Oxfordshire Conservative Association, was discovered Sunday morning in a portable toilet in the VIP backstage area of the music festival in Somerset.

Police said that a post-mortem and the circumstances surrounding the death "indicate it is not suspicious."

"Sam and I were devastated to hear the news about Christopher," Cameron said in an official statement issued by the Conservative Party on Sunday.

"He was a great friend and has been a huge support over the last decade in west Oxfordshire.

"A big rock in my life has suddenly been rolled away. Christopher was one of the most truly generous people I've ever met -- he was always giving to others, his time, his help, his enthusiasm and above all his love of life.

"It was in that spirit that he made a massive contribution to the Conservative Party both locally and nationally.

"Our love and prayers are with Nikki and the family. They've lost an amazing dad, west Oxfordshire has lost a big and wonderful man and like so many others Sam and I have lost a close and valued friend."

Festival organiser Michael Eavis described the death as "a suicide situation", but police said it was too early to day, while other sources suggested that it was a heart attack.

"Apparently I'm told it was a suicide situation in the early hours of this morning. It was in the Winnebago area. It's very very sad -- I can't say too much about it," Eavis said.

The Glastonbury festival, which atracts 170,000 party-goers to a dairy farm in Somerset, was headlined this year by U2, Coldplay and Beyonce.

The former Destiny's Child star will bring the three-day event to a close later on Sunday.
