LOGAN COUNTY, Okla. ? Mother of two, Kelly Shipley has been living on edge lately.?

She said, ?It?s scary; I don?t feel safe anymore.?

Authorities in Logan and Oklahoma counties said there has been a dramatic spike in home burglaries recently.

The crooks are not only breaking into cars; they have become even more brazen.

Logan Co. Chief Deputy Rob Groseclose said, ?As of late, we?ve had people take garage door openers to burglarize your home.?

Authorities?said the victims are essentially giving criminals a key to their house.

The intruders are walking around neighborhoods and checking car doors.

When they find an unlocked car, they go straight to the visor and your garage door opener.

Groseclose said, ?That? gives them?access to your house while you?re sleeping.?

It happened Tuesday morning to Angela MacKinnon?s neighbor.?

?She yelled and they left,? MacKinnon said. ?But she later found they had taken her purse.?

There have been about a half-dozen similar reports recently in northwest Oklahoma County.

?Society is so used to that,? Groseclose said ?We know where our garage door opener is all the time but so do the bad guys. So that?s a target they?ll look for, the opener. It?s a key to your house, absolutely.?

Police encourage homeowners to take every measure of security including locking the door from the garage to your house and keeping that remote out of sight.

Kelly Shipley isn?t taking and chances.

?We make sure the door is locked and the garage is shut at all times,? she said. ?We are keeping an eye on everything.?
