Newt Gingrich Tweet: 'Obama ... Most Effective Food Stamp President' (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | "Obama proves once gain he is the most effective food stamp president. Record levels were reached in May:bitly.com/pKeckj" says a tweet by former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and current part-time GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. The tweet was an obvious attempt to slight the president over the fact that 15 percent of Americans used food stamps in May.

I have a lot of questions for Gingrich. Why, for example, does a candidate who purports himself as "Christian" a word meaning "Christ-like," disparage a president for effective use of a program designed to give poor people the help they need in times of crisis?

Another question: What is it, exactly, that's wrong with a government, whose only real job is the protection of the citizenry, protecting that citizenry from starvation or malnutrition when they need our help?

Furthermore, if I may be so bold, how would president Gingrich do it differently? Would he allow the people to starve? What remedy would he propose for making sure that in America, hungry people can eat? Does he have a plan for helping hungry people eat? Or is he just taking political potshots that are all mouth and no heart?

It would be easy for me to point fingers at a Republican president that turned a surplus into a fiscal disaster for his successor to navigate, but that would be a pointless, though accurate tangent that would derail the actual argument. It's one thing to blame a president for a bad economy. I doubt Gingrich or any GOP candidate wants to have that conversation directly. It's another to say that once the situation of poverty exists, that doing something proactive to make sure that people eat today while we sort out the issues for tomorrow, is somehow a sign of an irresponsible, or ridicule-worthy leader.

Gingrich, in his tweet, has proved once again that he is a pompous elitist with a smart mouth and a heart of stone. Don't look now Newt! Your hypocrisy is showing!
